In a shocking political earthquake, the Republican Party has lost a Senate election in Alabama. For perspective on how difficult that feat was, the closest previous Senate contest in that state over the last two decades was a...19-point GOP victory. Just three years ago, Jeff Sessions ran unopposed. Donald Trump carried 'Bama by 28 points last fall. In my election preview post yesterday, I wrote that an upset by liberal Doug Jones was improbably plausible, due exclusively to the disastrously awful candidate Republicans had nominated. Apologies for quoting myself, but here you go:

Why would republicans want to see a conservative get elected? From what I can tell, they hate conservatives.
Outspent 10:1.
Concentrated assault by the media.
Concentrated assault by the Democrats across the country.
Concentrated assault by Hollywood.
Concentrated assault by GOP.
Manufactured stories sent incessantly to the media with no apparent foundation in truth.
And the candidate lost by a percentage point or two?
I don’t know how that could have happened. Alabama voters should be ashamed. I expect this crap in my state, not from Alabama.
He got 250,000 votes in the runoff and 650,000 in the general. So he probably didn’t lose the folks that voted for him the first time, he just didn’t get enough more to win the big one.
Please Tell Me That Was Sarcasm.
I feel much as you do.
Liberals: Those who want to increase the deficit by increasing spending.
Conservatives: Those who want to increase the deficit by lowering taxes.
Moore was a hero on FR for his stand in support of the Ten Commandments. Now he is on the junk heap with Ann Coulter, W, Peggy Noonan, Tom Delay, Grover Norquist, Buckley, Will, National Review, etc.
Please point out exactly where I said I despise Christians...or call yourself a liar.
How stupid was that?
Not when your candidate was as bad as crazy roy...he flat out said he wouldn’t back mcturtle...I mean how stupid is to come out and say that and blame them for not backing you!
The typical Republican voter is pathetic and has an attention span of a gnat. I have such disdain for those who “stay home” or “protest vote” knowing FULL well how important this seat is in the grand scope. The political party system is a joke. The GOP is a disgrace.
He’s probably guilty anyway. The people of Alabama are not stupid.
And yet they voted against Moore on what they considered to be moral issues.
Contrasting Liberals and Conservatives based on Tax Cuts is a flawed premise. When Reagan cut taxes, Federal tax receipts doubled. It did not increase the deficit.
Moore was a hero to us for his stands on various issues.
“”I cant watch TV, I gag every time I see the faces.””
Or hear the numerous yakking voices. I am into my 4th week of no TV news... I don’t have any desire to see/hear any of it. I can see all I want right here and not have to listen to the yammering/shouting/interrupting/smug commentators...
It's not like they were all Rockefellers or DC swamp creatures. They were people who lived in Alabama, who just couldn't take Roy Moore. They might be your friends or relatives or neighbors if you lived in the state, not millionaires and lobbyists and DC hacks.
Little did the good folks in Alabama know they'd been electing a worthless, ineffective, little tick turd all those years. His “tour of duty” as AG is a lesson in somnambulism taken to the extreme.
Ditto
Democrats get paid to go vote. Republicans have to vote out of a sense of civic duty.
“Republicans stayed home.”
And their candidate got bashed by the Republican establishment.
Do not presume that all of Trump’s votes came from Republicans.
The election was not “unlosable.” In fact, Alabama does not have a great track record when it comes to electing conservative solons. Time and time again during the 20th century, Alabama voters dutifully re-elected John Sparkman and Lister Hill, both liberal Democrats, to the Senate. And one might recall another “unlosable” election in 1986 when Jeremiah Denton, a Vietnam War hero with a solid conservative voting record, lost to Richard Shelby, then a Democrat.
