In a shocking political earthquake, the Republican Party has lost a Senate election in Alabama. For perspective on how difficult that feat was, the closest previous Senate contest in that state over the last two decades was a...19-point GOP victory. Just three years ago, Jeff Sessions ran unopposed. Donald Trump carried 'Bama by 28 points last fall. In my election preview post yesterday, I wrote that an upset by liberal Doug Jones was improbably plausible, due exclusively to the disastrously awful candidate Republicans had nominated. Apologies for quoting myself, but here you go:

A "Republican" different from Doug Jones in party designation only.
I had hoped that Moore would win, and really thought that he would win. But, after thinking about it, and seeing how close it was, I don’t think the dems have much to crow about. Obviously, Moore was not as popular in Alabama as I thought he was, particularly after being carpet bombed with sexual allegations for the last 6 weeks. You can add to that all the time, effort and MONEY spent by McConnell and others against him in the primaries, reportedly close to $30 MILLION. Plus, the dems poured in MILLIONS more into the Jones campaign. I’ve also heard that Moore neglected to “press the flesh” over the last several weeks, allowing Jones to out campaign him. Hillary Clinton learned the hard way that running a lazy, entitled campaign, doesn’t work, and I think Moore might have fallen into that same kind of trap.
Jones will have to run again in 2 years, and IF the gop runs a good candidate, Jones will be history.
If Moore had won, he would have been the subject of non-stop attacks in the media and in the Senate, and would have become a huge distraction. Maybe it’s for the best that he lost, but since he won the primary, there was really not enough time for another candidate to step in and be seen as legitimate.
What candidate could possibly when his own party was spending money against him and encouraging write-in votes for other candidates.
It's absurd to blame Moore for blatant act of sabotage by the Republican establishment.
When you have both parties and the Ministry of Propaganda against you, it’s an uphill fight in deep snow wearing flip-flops.
Seems self-evident doesn’t it.
Sad.
I agree. Here in ILLINOIS the GOP is supporting GOV. BRUCE RAUNER’S re-election bid even though he gleefully signed into law for the past four years abominable legislation too evil to mention, including a taxpayer abortion law that classifies a BABY in the womb as a NON-HUMAN.
Politicians and voters who have NO FEAR of the LORD will be quaking in their boots one day. They are accountable to HIM.
What worries me is the massive Dem turnout. It has happened twice now, in VA and AL.
2016 presidential election
Alabama
Trump 1.3 million
Clinton .7 million
2017 Senate election
Jones .67 million
Moore .65 million
Where did all the Republican voters go?
[Laugh it up airheads. Your proud display of morality will cost millions of more deaths, and a lot more destruction to our nation.]
Sad day for ALABAMA. Sad day for AMERICA.
The Republican voters turned out at the level predicted for a special election. It was the Dems that went bonkers and turned out like a flood.
The Democrats got out the vote, and the Republicans refused to.
The RNC played hardball with Moore. Unfortunately they NEVER play that type of ball with the Democrats.
I know felons were allowed to vote in VA. Maybe illegals were too?
Not sure about AL. Hopefully, their voter laws are more sensible.
Voting for candidates who claimed at one time or another to be Pro Life doesn’t seem to be working either, e.g. Bush, Bush II, McCain, Romney, etc.
The Dems turned out like it was a presidential election.
Sure is.
In both the VA and AL cases it was low turnout by Republican voters that cost them the election. And low turnout is usually an indication of a terrible candidate and/or a terrible message.
In Alabama, I think the candidate was terrible and the message didn't resonate (to the extent it even got out to voters).
In Virginia, I think the candidate was probably OK but message was terrible (in a sense that nobody believed it).
The problem the GOP has right now is that it has no credibility to even put together a coherent message ... because it's been in power in Washington for a year, and has absolutely nothing to show for it.
There are no unlosable races. Anybody thinking they have an unlosable race will lose.
Moore was the real deal on this issue.
He has proudly been pro-life for a long long time.
As for the others you mentioned some of them did some things that reduced abortions, but they never went full in like we needed.
Defunding Planned Parenthood is a must.
