Restaurant removes iconic photo after sexism outcry (“An American Girl in Italy")

The iconic black-and-white photograph of a young woman being ogled by men on an Italian street has been removed from the Center City restaurant Gran Caffe L’Aquila after its owner said he recently received about two dozen complaints from customers that it depicts sexual harassment.

The poster-size image had hung along the main staircase to the second floor of the Italian restaurant, visible to a portion of its second-floor dining room through a picture window, since its opening in December 2014.

Co-owner Riccardo Longo said complaints began last month, shortly after Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein began facing public accusations of harassment, unleashing a torrent of allegations against powerful men and opening new dialogue on the subject.

Longo said customers approached him directly to express their discomfort with the Ruth Orkin print from 1951, titled “An American Girl in Italy.

“The only thing that happened was that Ruth Orkin was wise enough to ask me to turn around and go back and repeat [the walk]… She told the man on motorcycle to tell the other men not to look at the camera.””

So, despite the claims, it is essentially staged.

Several of the men were obviously looking at the camera, and not the woman, and they had to be asked not to look at the camera.

The picture pretty much was the way that Roman men were reacting to my sister when we walked the streets years ago...the fact that she had blond hair made it worse.

It was completely staged.

The woman is a model, she was told to walk in a certain place, in a certain way to get a certain reaction, to create a certain image.

Then the scene was shot a second time to get a better take on the reaction, by issuing instructions to the men in the scene. It’s a work of art, not a candid snapshot. It’s world famous and creates a very specific reaction in the people that see it.

“It’s not a symbol of harassment. It’s a symbol of a woman having an absolutely wonderful time! I clutched my shawl to me because that sheaths the body. It was my protection, my shield. I was walking through a sea of men. I was enjoying every minute of it.”

...

But Jinx insists the men were harmless. “Very few of those men had jobs,” she explains, “Italy was recovering from the war and had really been devastated by it … I can tell you that it wasn’t the intent of any man there to harass me.”

PC crybabies may scream for a time, but when they don’t get their way they will lose interest and go scream about something else. There is no good reason I can see to give into any of their demands. And it is a public service not to.

Ohmigod, these "intellectual" liberals.....

THAT was the POINT of the picture to begin with!!!! To make you uncomfortable with the scene of an innocent girl being cat-called in the streets.

This is why this photo is considered "art" rather than just a cool snapshot.

If you think the girls are mad now just wait til they get their wishes and men STOP pursuing them.

Not really.
I attend a nondenominational (but fairly fundamentalist) outreach church.
Most of our families have three to six kids. When you view children as God's most precious gift that is what you generally see.

This is one of the major reasons that the left allies with Islam.
The Christian remnant in collapsing degenerate cultures always out-reproduces the immoral dross.

I wonder how long regular, normal woman are going to continue to put up with the discrimination, contempt and disdain the radical left has for them.

The progressives want woman to cover their beauty, not celebrate their femininity, to suppress their natural yearning for big, strong men, marrying and having gasp, babies! They want woman to put up with the gutter women hating muslim religion where they can be raped, beat, covered from head to toe and have no free will. They want them to be abused by powerful liberal men and women and remain silent and they want women to put up with perverts in their bathrooms, ogling them and their daughters and God forbid they arm themselves and fight back against abusive husbands or rapist!

Progressives talk a big game about supporting women but progressives have to because of the demeaning and vile crap they demand women put up with in the name if liberal/progressive political ideology.

The look on the girl’s face says it all. I don’t know what people see as acceptable in this photo.

Craig says "At no time was I unhappy or harassed in Europe"[4] and that "[the photograph is] not a symbol of harassment. It’s a symbol of a woman having an absolutely wonderful time!"[1] and "Italian men are very appreciative, and it’s nice to be appreciated. I wasn't the least bit offended"[5]

The photo is old and iconic. It is illustrative of Italian men and their attitude toward women decades ago. May as well go pull down some more confederate statues.

The behavior portrayed by the men in this photo is not acceptable.

Gotta say that the photo itself is acceptable, a great conversation starter.

You may find this interesting. There is a lot behind the story. The photographer (Ruth Orkin) is well credentialed. Perhaps instead of taking the photo down it could have been a learning moment for the libtards.

My expression is not one of distress, that was just how I stalked around the city. I saw myself as Beatrice of Dante’s Divine Comedy. You had to walk with complete assurance and maintain a dignity at all times. The last thing you would do would be to look them in the eye and smile. I did not want to encourage them. This image has been interpreted in a sinister way but it was quite the opposite. They were having fun and so was I.

That’s me in the picture: Ninalee Craig photographed by Ruth Orkin in Florence in 1951, aged 23

If Italian men did NOT been pinched, pat, or catcall there would, by now, be no more Italians.

.
This was obviously a staged photo.

It means nothing negative; it is praise of womanhood in general.

I personally see it that way; but it was Italy, many decades ago.

A picture like it taken in Europe today might be far more sinister, given new “demographics”.

That’s Nicolas Cage leaning in that photo. He doesn’t age. He is a vampire.

A declining population is not the end of the world. It’s cyclical. What’s insane is opening our borders.
