Climate change is having a huge impact on Afghanistan's agriculture-based society. Despite changing environment patterns, Afghan farmers have a limited understanding of how climate change is affecting their livelihood.
For generations, Salman Mohammadi's family has worked on a farm in the Lal Wa Sar Jangal district in Afghanistan's central Ghor province. The farming, he recalls, was hard but the life was simple.
But things started to change in the past few years as Mohammadi noticed a disturbance in the rain and snowfall patterns.
Mohammadi's case is not unique. Over the past decades, many Afghan farmers have had to leave farming and move to the capital Kabul to earn a living. Although the worsening security is one of the reasons behind this exodus, climate change, too, plays a role.
Mohammadi, as well as other farmers, are unaware of the impact of climate change on their lives. Most of them attribute it to the will of god.
"Climate change and environment protection are relatively new concepts for Afghans, but we are trying to raise awareness about them," Samim Hoshmand, an official at the National Environment Protection Agency, told DW.
"Our awareness campaign can help farmers undertake certain measures to protect themselves from the negative effects of the global climate change," Hoshmand added.
Afghan officials also have to deal with a number of cultural and religious taboos when educating farmers about global warming and climate change phenomena.
For example, Mohammadi believes his country is experiencing less rainfall because "god is punishing" them for the ongoing violence and war.
Also, Mohammadi is not interested in understanding the reasons behind the changing weather patterns. It is certainly not his top priority as he has to deal with the harsh city life in Kabul.

Opium.
Is it just me, or is the article light on information about the weather conditions, historically speaking, and heavy on trying to make an AGW point?
That was what I was noticing was conspicuous in its absence here as well. :)
They're still grinding grain with a stone wheel, live in filth and are ignorant. They have nothing because they don't know there's another world out there.
And in the same breath....I believe Afghanistan WAS a successful country at one time.
Women, children and muslims hit hardest.
Nope. Not just you. What you perceive is encoded directly in the title. You don’t even have to read the article.
You are spot on.
[[For Afghan farmers, climate change is ‘god’s will’]]
For people with common sense AND science on their side, climate change is a natural cyclical event that has always happened and always will happen- some decades will be warmer, some colder- period- end of story.
The same farmers also have the enlightened view that it is Allah’s will to separate your torso from your head.
Never has rained here. The old way of farming used ancient underground tunnels from the mountains where it snows. The Soviets blew up the Karez systems and they actually farm 20% of the acreage they did in the 70s.
Not a damn thing to do with climate change, but the bastards see a way of squeezing euros from NATO and dollars from uncle sugar.
What,......you mean with the Claymores poping up everywhere and then there's the scattered heavy metal rain!
Then, the 5.56mm flies that swarm when the jihads appear!
There's even an increase in feral animals roaming around....i.e. that Warthog creature.
It never has rained much in Afghanistan. Not since the days of Alexander the Great. They had awesome underground irrigation systems to bring water from the mountains that the soviets destroyed. Not a damn thing to do with climate change.
Pure propaganda.
“For people with common sense AND science on their side,” The Following..
Roundup sprayed LIBERALLY on all POPPY fields will help the rest of the world muchly !
Trashcanistans are just the first, then South American “farms”...
This is off-topic, but that ‘god’s will’ gimmick triggered an old memory.
My dad worked at the Seaman’s YMCA in NYC during WWII and spoke with a lot of guys who were torpedoed and took to the lifeboats, sometimes surviving for weeks.
Almost always they said that the first to die were Muslims and Hindus as they all just gave up, saying it was ‘god’s will’ and did little to prolong their lives.
There is profound stupidity in these two little sentences.
First: EVERY farmer knows that changes in climate affect their farming. Including these farmers.
Second: They are only trying to sell Mohammad on an idea he already essentially has. Mohammad's version is god angry at all the fighting. The climate change alarmists version is nature angry at all the CO2. However Mohammad at least is wise enough to realize it doesn't matter who we blame it on, he has to deal with real world problems. But for the climate change alarmists the whole idea is establishing who to blame it on, so they can establish themselves as champions of nature and feel righteous. If they were really interested in helping farmers, they would instead learn and teach some really useful agricultural techniques instead of who-to-blame theory for the climate not being optimal...but then again if they knew much about agriculture and cared about farmers they would be pro-CO2.
