The research clearly shows that spanking is related to an increased likelihood of many poor health, social and developmental outcomes. These poor outcomes include mental health problems, substance use, suicide attempts and physical health conditions along with developmental, behavioural, social and cognitive problems. Equally important, there are no research studies showing that spanking is beneficial for children.
Those who say spanking is safe for a child if done in a specific way are, it would seem, simply expressing opinions. And these opinions are not supported by scientific evidence.

I’m against it too, but the article is written with weasel words. “is related to” is a weaselly way to make us think that there is a cause-effect relationship, when there is not. This is about correlation, not cause.
I was never spanked. I was held accountable through more creative and long-term punishments.
I don’t believe in it. My parents never believed in it. I have the same philosophy that they did...it’s a lazy way to punish a child that essentially teaches them hitting and physical pain are the only ways to correct behavior.
We were brought up to be respectful of others, thoughtful of our actions and that owning up to our mistakes was the only path to forgiveness.
I raised 3 boys basically by myself, I ruled them or they would rule me. Alpha, Leo, First Born, didn't take any crap from them, hand, belt were my tools. When they got past paddle stage, LONG house restrictions, with bed time after home work. Dish washing/drying for a month...they learned I ruled.
They are healthy, grounded, and work. Eldest has a 16 yr old, youngest a 2 month old.
If Dad was unbuckling it...you had already done gone way too far. LOL. It wasn’t a threat, you had it coming.
Ping for later.
“The research clearly shows that spanking is related to an increased likelihood of many poor health, social and developmental outcomes. “
Just the opposite. Liberals lie.
“Growing up we got the belt. My fathers leather belt against our bottoms.”
Ditto here. Stung like hell and left welts but no chance of serious injury like using hands/fist could pose. Also, there was the ruler in teachers hands...also stung and welted!
My problem personally is I could never recall what specific “crimes” I committed to call for corporal punishment. Furthermore, I do remember being totally innocent and still getting thrashed. I remember a cousin getting whipped mercilessly for what seemed an eternity and he screamed like a banshee for the duration. Needless to say we had “old school” parents.
Given the state of modern day “millenial” types I would be all for mass extreme canings.
You sure love to post anti-spanking threads. What’s with you? Did you get abused as a child?
“I do child abuse work and spanking is wrong. Period.”
Look at the crap they get away with on college campuses? Lot of good “time outs” have done, A “time out” when I was young meant a period of unconsciousness.
Yep - I don’t recall being spanked but my Mom said it happened when I was young enough that I couldn’t reason well about the dangers of certain activities - it taught me to pay attention and then talking would be effective - remember being 12 and doing something bad and when my Dad got done talking I was wishing for a spanking instead....tided me well and that’s how I did my kids and how they did their kids - have some beautiful and truly good children and grandkids...none of whom have ever been abused but have been disciplined.
And the farmer hauled another load away.........
Actually it was more of a deterrent or threat. He did it at the first sign of acting up.
That’s why ‘researchers’ should never have children.
How did you discipline your children?
.
HA! Everybody I know got spanked growing up. We all turned out fine. A bunch of us were joking about it at a deck party last weekend.
My mother kept a fly swatter hanging over the washing machine. Every now and then we got a swatting. I can say I deserved it every time. :-)
This is obviously some sort of crusade for you, much like that Willie guy who used to spam us about the benefits of high-speed rail projects or the Libertarians constantly endorsing drug legalization. I doubt you’ll get as many converts as you will flak.
Well,I’d say you don’t have all the knowledge you use to make that blanket statement & this is backed up by personal experience.
Well,I’d say a blanket statement like that is wrong & apparently you don’t have all the info you need to say something like that. This is based on personal experience.
