This mornings headline at one Indian news website said it all: Trouble for Indian Techies
The trouble is coming from a move by the Trump administration that will raise the bar for H-1B visa holders in the United States seeking to renew their permits to work here. Also impacted by the directive announced this week is the L1 visa, which is popular among foreign IT professionals. The Trump team wants visa holders to carry the burden of proof not only when applying for an H-1B the first time, but every time an extension is sought.

Which is why he was elected
Companies hiring H1B should be forced to hire and train an American, let that H1B do it, so that the American takes over their job once the H1B permit expires. No renewal. And make companies commit to employing that American for an additional period of time equal to the H1B stay. Invest in Americans!
Visas no longer handed out like halloween candy...
To bad the GOP Congress increased H1B visas by up to 300% a year before Trump was elected.
Headline “Trump’s ban on Indians”
” Indians External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj recently told U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that the United States must not make any decision adversely impacting Indian people.”
Who is India to tell us what we must or must not do? Go preach to China, where a foreigner can never become a citizen and is lucky to get a 2 year visa.
Not only should the onus be on the visa applicant, it’s about time we cracked down on the requirement for the employer to provide concrete proof, that they have recruited for the opening within the US, that the job description is one that can actually be filled from outside the company, and there is no one in America who can fill the job or be trained in a reasonable amount of time to do the job (that is, someone who has all the skills but doesn’t have 5 years experience in a company proprietary database or process, for example).
H1Bs are taking jobs from Americans and artificially lowering wages so they can stay here. It’s a major racket. Any corporation hiring excessive numbers of H1Bs should be investigated and punitively fined.
The STEM shortage is a lie. Its all about percieved cost. Lower regs for businesses to hire Americans.
Career IT guy after two-terms military. Degree in Accounting but in 96 my first gig they were more interested in tech skills so I started as an IT Auditor. 5 months of that was enough and got slotted in a programmer/analyst position though mostly just Unix and app admin. Did that for a teatgot the next gig....
My gripe is these Ddays I’d never get a chance. We need Panjeet with a Masters in Software Engineering to run extracts of employee data out of an HR app. My team at the office is 50% Indian. My Indian boss is hiring me a white kid when he graduates in May so my boss is pretty aware that change has taken place. His old team was all H1-B before he became a manager of integration applications (besides the one He was on)
Fire them all!!!
Too little, too late
Gonna be a huge vacancy rate for dive apartments in Redmond, WA. They will have a lingering curry odor.....
The New Greater America legislation:
BAN CITIZENSHIP of all CEOs & managers who use visa foreigners.
Damn right. We ain’t Motel 6 for the whole freakin’ world.
Damn right. We aint Motel 6 for the whole freakin world.
Well put!
Waay too many stories have hit the popular press of nice, normal American IT people (Disney, PG & E, among others) having their jobs outsourced to India, or taken by H1-B types.
When the bigshots say, “We can’t find any Americans to do the job” they really mean “We can’t find any suckers to work for the wages we’ll pay foreigners happy to do the job for us.”
Did he replace an Indian manager? It is my experience that once one of these foreigners is in a position to hire, you'll never see another American hired.
I worked selling employee benefits in Silicon Valley in the 90s and talked one on one to a very many employees. The white tech people were being replaced with Indian workers who would do the job at half the price. The companies said they couldnt find Americans to do the jobs, but I think it was strictly money.
This is a huge part of those companies becoming the richest on the planet and Im sure its why they didnt want a Trump. They want more of these visas, not less.
Sort of. An Indian sweet talker brought him in to implement Big Data. The Indian Director was fired at some point and he managed the ETL team so my boss slid into that role. Now he’s got more apps in his command and one is mine. He’s likely been here a long time. Eats meat, sips alcohol etc.
