Mass starvation has wiped out thousands of penguin chicks in Antarctica, with unusually thick sea ice forcing their parents to forage further for food in what conservationists Friday called a "catastrophic breeding failure".
They attributed the disaster to extensive sea ice late in the summer, meaning the adult penguins had to travel further to find food, with the chicks dying as they waited.

Oh, you noticed that too: Excessive sea ice around Antarctica was the cause.
So, of course, global warming must be causing the penguins to die ....
Because, you see, in June 2014, the Antarctic sea ice set an all-time record high extents. The “excess” sea ice for that date exceeded the entire area of Greenland!
Some animals are more equal than others.

But they have been declining in the Antarctic region more generally where climate change has taken its toll, with shifting ice reducing habitat while warming seas affect their prey.
If only they were in aquariums, they could have survived.

The article said that two of the four breeding programs were catastrophic failures.
Sounds like we were trying to introduce them into particular areas....and WE screwed up. They shouldn't have been put in two of the areas.
This is a Whopping .075% of all penguins in the Antarctic.
Animals are born then they die and get eaten by other animals.
As a comparison, American women aborted 3.7% of all human babies last year.
Of course, Planned Parenthood is about the same as the predator animals. They cut up the baby parts and sell them for profit.
Does a Penguin taste like chicken?
According to Al Gore’s Amazing Internet, penguins are edible but it’s “frowned upon” for environmental purposes. The meat is very oily and strong flavored.
Antarctic explorers used to eat them frequently during their expeditions. They would also gather and eat the eggs.
maybe like Ortolans, they are illegal to eat except for natives... A bit decadent.
