Education Secretary Betsy DeVos vowed Thursday to replace what she branded the “failed system” of campus sexual assault enforcement, to ensure fairness for victims and the accused.
“Instead of working with schools . . . ,” DeVos said, “the prior administration weaponized the Office for Civil Rights.”
“We must do better because the current approach isn’t working,” she said.
DeVos spoke to about 100 invited guests at George Mason University, where protesters had gathered outside, worried that she would announce changes to the way sexual violence cases are handled on campuses across the country.
“One rape is one too many,” DeVos said firmly, and “not one more survivor will be silenced. We will not abandon anyone.” As a mother, she said she has sympathy for parents whose children are victims of sexual misconduct. “I cannot imagine receiving that call.”
But she also repeatedly emphasized the rights of students who are accused, saying one person denied due process is one too many, and was harshly critical of the system established by the Obama administration, saying it had failed too many schools. “School administrators tell me it has run amok.”
She said the department would go through a formal process seeking public input in order to replace the current system with a more effective and just system.
“Every survivor of sexual misconduct must be taken seriously,” she said. “Every student accused of sexual misconduct must know that guilt is not predetermined.
“These are non-negotiable principles.”
DeVos criticized a key element of Obama’s policy: that schools use a standard known as “preponderance of the evidence” when weighing sexual misconduct cases.
“Washington dictated that schools must use the lowest standard of proof . . . it’s no wonder so many call these proceedings ‘kangaroo courts.’ ”

DeVos is being torn apart on the internet over this...I keep asking the same question and libs just don’t seem to have a good answer for me...Is “innocent till proven guilty” crap or not?????
Excellent step in the right direction. Under zero, if the University and its various civil rights commissions, deemed the accused guilty (by a simple majority), then the accusation would go on the accused record and transcript and follow him everywhere he went including jobs he applied for. In criminal law, the accused has his day in court and guilt or innocence is determined by a UNANIMOUS verdict by the Jury. Not so with these University commissions who deny due process of the accused.
It's hard to imagine that no rapes and no genuine violation short of rape occur at colleges today.Some young guys,particularly when drunk,do commit real crimes....including,one could reasonably suspect,rape.
But one could just as reasonably suspect that some,if not *many*,accusations of rape made by college students today are,at least,wildly exaggerated if not down right false.
really, this is what she’s talking about? what happened to private school tax relief for working parents, or even vouchers for parent’s opting out of federal schools? i thought that was her thing.

Yes, rape happens and it is bad, but WRONGFUL ARREST FOR RAPE IS JUST AS BAD IF NOT WORSE.
In rape, and innocent person has something bad happen to them. It happens and it is over.
In fake rape charge, an innocent person is accused of BEING the person doing something bad. It follows you for the rest of your life.
(yes I know rape affects a person forever too, but you’re innocent and your life continues. In the other case the person is innocent and his life is ruined)
Because liberals dont believe in innocent til proven guilty, they believe in guilt until proven innocent..and even if that person is proved innocent the left will still say they are guilty

Actually,I think most democrats,liberals,progressives and all feminists believe it’s okay to destroy some innocent men,as long as they get rid of the rapists...
They believe in guilt and innocence based on identity politics.
Being a man does not equate to being guilty of assault, which is what Obama policies made the default presumption at universities.

People who commit REAL rape should be hung by the neck until dead....People who perpetrate rape hoaxes should spend a minimum of 20 years in prison turning big rocks into little ones.
