Dangerous Category 5 Hurricane Irma had a devastating impact on islands in the Caribbean.
Hurricane and Storm surge watches were issued Thursday morning for South Florida. The Florida Keys began evacuating visitors and residents, followed by flood zones in Miami and Miami Beach. Sarasota FL declared a local state of emergency Thursday morning.
Polk County FL Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday that law enforcement authorities would check the identities of people who turn up at shelters--and take to jail anyone found to have an active arrest warrant. If you go to a shelter for Irma and you have a warrant, well gladly escort you to the safe and secure shelter called the Polk County Jail... If you have a warrant, turn yourself in to the jail its a secure shelter. Judd also posted that sex offenders and sex predators would not be admitted to the shelters. "We cannot and we will not have innocent children in a shelter with sexual offenders & predators. Period." Judd's statements unleashed a liberal firestorm via Twitter.

When I was 12 Hurricane Dora took a sudden left hand turn and slammed into Jax with 120 mph winds. Most people hadn’t boarded up because it was supposed to run up the coast. Our plate glass window in the living room just kept waffling back and forth. My Dad sat up all night with a broomstick propped against it.
The eye passed right over our house. We all ran out and watched it for about 5 minutes til the other side started to hit.
Really???!!! You can’t manage a little gratitude for a guy who sacrifices his comfort and security to help people hurt by these hurricanes? What’s your problem? I don’t understand your venom towards him OR me.
Ok, ok...sorry. Just trying to be helpful.
The storm was Hurricane Joaquin (2015).
Haha -glad you found that. I was trying to pull it up here,

but I’ll be darned if I can get the filters and such to actually narrow the search. (”Basins” worked for me at one point, but after that, I got more results, not less. I guess I’m not enough of a computer geek, after all!)
EURO is more SW..skirts the Northern coast of Cuba before hard right turn
Yes, ECMWF has nudged it a bit more to the west. The second best model, UKMET takes it more into Cuba and even further west. It weakens quite a bit too.
Landfall as a Cat 5?
Just put the trash out Saturday. It’ll get picked up.
no way this is still a CAT 5 IMO...
should have been lowered at 11pm even more(might be post analyst) and recon has been showing winds decreasing since then
the NHC may be be conservative with the decrease so people won’t let there gaurd down with a “weaker” storm since it may come back
but trends are looking for better for the nightmare scenario of hugging the east coast then in GA/SC
It looks like Great Inagua Island (Bahamas) should now be through the worst Irma will throw at it?
I thought maybe that island would be big enough to diminish Irma a bit, but, it’s mostly flat, 1/4 of it is inland lakes (probably very warm?), and the highest spot is only 132 ft. elevation. Other stats: 596 sq. miles, under 2 people / sq. mile, home to a large Morton Salt facility (#2 producer of “solar” sea salt in the world), and also home of a large avian sanctuary, with over 80,000 West Indian flamingos, as well as many other species. It is also home to a sea turtle sanctuary, as is the island of “Little Inagua”. Damage to the salt factory is unknown; I’d think the birds must be in a very bad way; maybe the turtles did better?
And... Hopefully that factory has very safe areas for the people!
I’m reading (uncited sources) that all willing residents were evacuated from Inagua.
What are the negatives you have on the Salvation Army?
“What are the negatives you have on the Salvation Army?”
After the speech Trump gave about Charlottesville, and the MSM reported lies about what he’d said (re KKK, Antifa, white supremicists, BLM, etc), the Salvation Army was one of the first to condemn him and pull their scheduled event from Mar-A-Lago.
#1. Either they believed the lies, so that makes them too stupid to be respected OR they didn’t necessarily believe the MSM but didn’t want to appear to support Trump so that makes them weak and unprincipled.
#2. If the Salvation Army is holding events at Mar-A-Lago, they don’t need my money. I’ve worked at a five-star resort and know the cost of these events. That money should be going to help people.
That’s all. I’ve done bell ringing for them for several years, but really have a problem with this new information. Don’t think I’ll do it again.
What makes you think Trump's Mar-A-Lago is charging them? Given that when he divied up his million bucks with a portion going to the SA, wouldn't it be more likely that he donated the use of the facilities to them as well?
OK. Say Mar-A-Lago isn’t charging them.
That still leaves #1.
For big mega-fundraising events like this, there are usually high-profile, deep-pocket sponsors that cover the cost of such an event - not that it would be covered with SA donated funds.
