When I was 12 Hurricane Dora took a sudden left hand turn and slammed into Jax with 120 mph winds. Most people hadn’t boarded up because it was supposed to run up the coast. Our plate glass window in the living room just kept waffling back and forth. My Dad sat up all night with a broomstick propped against it.

The eye passed right over our house. We all ran out and watched it for about 5 minutes til the other side started to hit.

I was reporting to Mayport to go aboard the Saratoga when Dora struck. I nearly drowned in that storm trying to help put up a sandbag wall to try to keep the Atlantic out of the officer’s housing on base. I was twenty years old.
