No evacuation orders will be issued in Miami-Dade County yet, Mayor Carlos Gimenez said Wednesday, warning that people living on barrier islands and low-lying mainland areas may still be asked to leave ahead of Hurricane Irma.

Gimenez had been ready to instruct residents to get out, but he said the 11 a.m. Irma advisory from the National Hurricane Center gave him pause.

“The storm’s slowing down, giving us a little bit more time,” Gimenez said from the county’s emergency operations center in Doral.

Nearly half a million residents who live in storm-surge zones A and B could be asked to leave before Irma hits, Gimenez said. That evacuation of about 470,000 people would take about 26 hours, according to county estimates.

We have a condo in Fort Lauderdale and everyone, who is currently there, was told to evacuate by noon tomorrow or they’re on their own. We’re in MA. right now.

Exactly, I'm not listening to some loser Mayor to opine about anything.

Exactly!

Once I knew there was a good chance, I’d be gone. The traffic would only get worse.

So what’s the worst that could happen? You lose a few days of work and go back to your home just the way you left it.

Oh the humanities!

Are there blacks in FLA? If there are, then I guess the mayor of Miami-Dade don’t like black people much.

Right?

The former Cubans in Miami are credited by some with putting Trump over the top there.

Mass evacuations, themselves, can cause very significant issues, including loss of life.

It may be that holding off on issuing the evacuation orders is being done for strategic purposes, to help them get resources to assist with the evacuation in place, move more vulnerable populations out first, etc.

Somehow, if this goes bad, the media will make it Trump’s fault.

What I don’t get is how people constantly lose everything when they know for days a major storm is bearing down.

I think if I lived in the hurricane zone, I’d have some sort of bug out location ready. Valuables would be placed in a storage locker or a friends house about 50-100 miles inland.

As much as possible would be moved to the attic. I’d consider placing an inflatable boat in the house with some items in it that need to stay but can float up with the flood. Have another inflatable for evac if needed.

30 days of dry food is mandatory along with a supply of water, propane, a couple camp stoves and a firearm or two. Done.

I’m not a prepper but if you live in a weather zone like Florida, it just makes sense.

If by “packed up” you mean taking every possible item of value, I agree. Important papers, investment certificates, cash, coins, jewelry, computers, video and audio equipment, movie and music discs, photos, etc. Otherwise, weather evacuations end up making you part of wealth redistribution.
