DNA discovery identifies living descendants of Biblical Canaanites

DNA research is shining new light on the Biblical Canaanite civilization, which existed thousands of years ago in the Middle East.

The ancient civilization, which created the first alphabet and is mentioned frequently in the Bible, has long fascinated historians. LiveScience reports that, because the Canaanites kept their records on papyrus, rather than clay, relatively little is known about them.

Now, however, scientists have found a genetic ‘trail’ back to the Canaanites’ ancient world.

By sequencing the genomes of five Canaanites that lived 4,000 years ago with genomes from 99 people living in modern day Lebanon, researchers identified a strong genetic link to the mysterious civilization.

The results surprised the scientists, whose work was supported by U.K. biomedical research charity The Wellcome Trust.

The Magyars settled in what is now Hungary in 895. Before that they lived in western Siberia--the closest relatives of the Hungarian language are in Siberia, spoken by small numbers of people. Finnish and Estonian are more distantly related to Hungarian.

Hungarian has adopted some words from the Slavs who were in Hungary before they arrived. Genetically they are pretty similar to the surrounding Slavic peoples, suggesting that a small elite from Siberia imposed their rule over a more numerous Slavic-speaking population.

You have not met the Lebanese I know; about six feet plus muscular. His mom is tall as are his uncles. Maybe from different areas of Lebanon than Danny Thomas/Jamie Farr The young man is first generation American on that side.

Thanks, knew that as well but yet again the Magyars came out across the Tibetan planes and grandma said that and grandma ain’t wrong. You have a problem I’ll put her on the phone to you although I doubt you’ll have a decent nights sleep for a week.

Across the Tibetan planes.

How many Tibetan planes parked wing to wing would it take to stretch all the way to -- I dunno, pick someplace -- how 'bout -- Cincinnati?

Air - La Femme D'Argent yeah, I know, that ain't cincinnati...

I had a DNA test. It said my DNA was 97% ape.

The other DNA was 80% European and 2%Asian.

Why is 'race' being categorized by names of geographical areas ?

“My DNA test showed I was 18% Sub-Sahara where Jews lived and where Noah came from. And yes, I’m Jewish.”

Sub Saharan is black African.

Israelites were too few in numbers to totally displace
the original inhabitants

The Philistines and Canaanites had chariots which Israelite
did not have

Israelites stuck to the hill country leaving Canaanites
and Philistines in control of the coastal plains

Very Interesting. I was told that Korean (Hangul) is one of the closest languages to Hungary...spoken, not written because of east Asian alphabet...

Hangul is the name for the Korean alphabet--the only alphabet invented in east Asia.

Korean may or may not be distantly related to Japanese--expert opinion seems to be divided. If there is any connection between Korean and Hungarian it would be very remote. The languages related to Hungarian are in western Siberia, a long ways away from the Korean peninsula.

You are correct about Hangul. Did not mean to confuse the language with the script. Food for thought...(excerpt from article on the Korean Language)

Korean is one of the world's oldest living languages, and its origins are is as obscure as the origin of the Korean people. Nineteenth Century Western scholars proposed a number of theories that linked the Korean language with Ural-Altaic, Japanese, Chinese, Tibetan, Dravidian Ainu, Indo-European and other languages. Korean is most likely a distant relative of the Ural-Altaic family of languages which includes such diverse languages as Mongolian, Finnish, and Hungarian.

From a scientific paper published on Canaanite-related DNA found in present-day Lebanese people, the Christian-hating leftist media headlined the scientific results as disproving the Bible.

In her August 3, 2017, Federalist article, "Media Falsely Claim DNA Evidence Refutes Scripture," Mollie Hemingway reviews and links to the media claims. Mollie states, in part:

Of the many things that journalists are ignorant of, religion is at the top of the list. I like to collect examples of biblical illiteracy. The Associated Press once gave William Butler Yeats credit for writing Hebrews. The New York Times said that Easter marks the resurrection of Jesus … into heaven.

The past few days have seen a flurry of articles claiming that a new archeological find disputes the scriptural account of the Canaanites....

The only problem being, of course, that all of these stories are wrong about what the Bible claims regarding the annihilation of the Canaanites.

Some of the media outlets above slightly revised or outright corrected their stories. All were too willing to accept the assumptions in the original study, which made misleading claims about what scripture teaches regarding Canaanites.
Mollie then goes on to explain in references and passages from the Old Testament what the Bible actually states.
"It could not be more clear. Over and over and over again, we’re told that the Canaanites survived."
The Biblical illiteracy begins with the authors (and all of the reviewers and journal editors) of the scientific paper, "Continuity and admixture in the last five millennia of Levantine history from ancient Canaanite and present-day Lebanese genome sequences," (Marc Haber, et al., The American Journal of Human Genetics, Volume 101, Issue 2, pp. 274–282, 3 August 2017, online 27 July 2017), which states (p. 275):
"Uncertainties also surround the fate of the Canaanites: the Bible reports the destruction of the Canaanite cities and the annihilation of its people; if true, the Canaanites could not have directly contributed genetically to present-day populations."
The authors provided no reference to the Scriptures for their assertion.
