Honestly, I don’t know what the context was, so not so sure just how “terrible” this is. We treat this word as the ONLY thing that must not be said, and if it is, then you’d think you’d done murder.

Even in the worst context, not sure he deserves the level of retribution put by Kathy Griffin for her disgusting yet glib reference to REAL Moslem atrocities, using a very clear representation of the president.
