Cicadas are awakening 4 years early. It’s not a sign of the apocalypse but a scientific mystery

n 2004, billions upon billions of shrimp-size insects took to the skies in the mid-Atlantic United States, covering entire houses, blaring extremely loud noises, and littering forests with their exoskeletons. When the swarm was finally over, the insects — cicadas — laid their eggs in the ground. Residents were told these creatures wouldn’t emerge again for another 17 years.

The cicadas had other plans.

Reports in Baltimore and the Washington, DC, metro area indicate that a small group of the cicadas — a group called Brood X — are emerging from the ground to molt, mate, and make noise. They weren’t supposed to return until 2021.

No, it can't be normal or natural! It just can't!

One theory: climate change?

I count it as another win for Trump. After all, it's chow time for our American songbirds! Beautiful!

“We know they’re from Brood X because of where they’re popping up. Different cicada broods occupy different parts of the country.”

Heh? Since when?

There is LOTS of overlap of broods, even of the same gestation period.

Maryland - my home, in which I have not yet noticed any of these things - is home to several broods, apparently II, X, XIV, XIX. No, they’re not due, but maybe there is some mix-up OR other broods are starting to encroach here.

BTW, we ALWAYS have cicadas. It is one of the sounds of summer (and for decades I thought they were some kind of birds, as well as thinking toad sounds were insects). Are they examining these to verify which cicadas they are?

I had a dog that used to love eating those things. She viewed them as flying, high protein, crunchy snack. In my area they come out every year, but some years there’s a whole lot more than others.

Post of the day.

One could say, Dems are replicating the Great Eastern Brood cicadas, both in numbers out in public and screaming!

There are MANY species of cicadas. In Balto-DC we have several every single year.

But the 17-year Brood X is massive, and when they come out, they cover everything. It’s disgusting. My 2004 - this very time of year - was house-hunting, and many houses and lawns/sidewalks were covered with them. Not a fun time for realtors!

These are Russian cicadas colluding with Trump to do something. Mueller needs to get on this.

Likely just an overlapping or expanding brood. Not every brood is on the same cycle. Could also be that two broods coincided recently, intermixed and are now on their own cycle.

Ok, that’s the kind we get.

It’s always a crowd pleaser to get out a a fishing pole and tie fishing line to them and watch them fly around.
