Rice U. does away with ‘master’ term, cites ‘negative historical connotation’

Rice University has agreed to officially change its title for the heads of its residential colleges from “master” to “magister,” saying “master” had to go because of its “negative historical connotation,” according to campus officials.

Despite the fact that the term “master” may have originated as an abbreviation of “headmaster” or “schoolmaster,” many are reportedly upset by the term because it’s a reminder of slavery.

“‘Magister’ is a classical Latin word meaning ‘teacher’ and has been used historically as an academic title for a scholar,” states John Hutchinson, dean of undergraduates, in an April 6 memo announcing the change.

“It conveys the traditional role and duties of the people holding this position, without the negative historical connotation of the word “master,’” Hutchinson stated. “We believe that ‘college magister’ holds true to our cultural roots, while eliminating the concerns and confusion about the previous title.”

The process of changing the name started early last year when Rice officials decided that a discussion was in order after some Ivy League schools also changed the “master” title, citing its historical ties to slavery. Princeton and Yale changed their title from “master” to “head of college.” Harvard changed the name to “Faculty Deans.”

will colleges do away with bachelor’s degrees and master’s degrees, due to the potentially offensive nature of those terms???

then the Master’s golf tournament has to go too, doesn’t it? If we carry this to the extreme, as liberal radical types tend to do???

Don’t they have to do away with terms such as freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior? Because those terms denote rankings within the college, and if we’re all about banning offensive terms and pushing “equality”, then we have to look at these other words as well.

Parents: keep your kids as far from mainstream (and secondary)colleges as possible. Check good trade schools, so they can at least acquire the skills necessary to survive, make a living, and support a family.

And I, for one, am tired of the opprobrium heaped upon the PhD. "Pile it higher and deeper," indeed. I am offended. Most of us make sure that every stolen thought and fact in our documents are properly footnoted so the only charge that can be leveled against us is dull, boring, unoriginal grad-grinds and leaches on society. At least we are not the worst of all offenders, plagiarists who reiterate thoughts that were not only original with themselves, but not even original with the person they stole it from.

On another side of this issue, Jesse Jackson was awarded a "Master of Divinity Degree." Try to get your PC head around that one!

When are they going to change the name of the university? After all, William Marsh Rice owned slaves.

the end of masters degrees? bachelors are next, watch. We’ll go from ‘associate’ to ‘doctorate’ so everybody can have initials after their name, it’s only fair /s

More and more I think a college degree is simply a certification that a person endured 4 or more years of idiocy and PC brainwashing. It is hardly proof that the bearer of said degree has learned anything useful.

“Magister” could also be a problem as is could remind one of “magistrate”, a court officer whose job it is to put minorities into jail. /s

Seems it would have. Maybe Rice students will start protesting its use. Then there the other uses of the word - such as he mastered the art of - in publications that need revision. The potential for abnormal outrage is endless.

Outright nitwits and bumpkins populate the administrative offices of many colleges and universities. If these administrators have time to focus their attention on such trivial matters, then they have too much free time on their hands.

There is plenty of money when you get a college degree - if it is the right degree.
