Full Title: Syria crisis: Russia raises prospect of war if it is given G7 ultimatum as it mocks Boris Johnson's no-show
Russia and Iran has threatened military retaliation against the US, accusing Donald Trump of crossing red lines by ordering a cruise missile attack on a Syrian air base. The two military allies of Syria said the US bombardment had violated international law and, in a statement, added: From now on we will respond with force.
Boris Johnson, the Foreign Secretary, is understood to be working on a proposal from the G7 group of nations which will demand that Vladimir Putin remove his troops from Syria and drop his backing for Bashar al-Assad.
[snip]... On Sunday Russia mocked Mr Johnson, saying his refusal to visit was deplorable and, in a series of jibes on Twitter, questioned whether he would make a fit wartime lieutenant to the American president.

Are school kids going to start practicing again to get under their desks?
I dont know if that is true from the 50s/60s or an urban legend :)
Cause I can’t see WHAT GOOD it would do!!
Trust me.
It’s true.
I did it.
Yes, I did it, too. Duck and cover!
Drop and cover. And, on occasion, class by class in perfectly straight and orderly lines, no talking, marching to the cafeteria ‘fallout shelter’ to sit in line, no talking, by class, reversing the process, no talking, after 15 minutes or so at the ‘all clear’ bell. And then the day proceeded as if nothing untoward had happened at all. Where were we? Oh yes, Johnny, it was your turn, what is the capital of Spain ? Sarah, the capital of Italy, please? And so it went.
I thought the UK version was:
Miffed
Peeved
Irritated
A Bit Cross
A Bloody Nuisance
It’s certainly better than standing next to the windows.
It also could save lives depending on how far away from ground zero you are.
At or near ground zero it doesn’t matter. But on the edge of the blast it could save your life.
Russia cannot afford to go to war with us. They are flat broke. The drop in the price of oil is clobbering them.
It is true. During that time I was in grade school both in the states and in Europe as a military dependent. It was not so much as good but the first step to any chance of survival was to protect against the shock wave from the blast. That was the reason for duck and cover.
And if anyone else said what putin’s government said along with its allies, the mad mullahs of Iran and the chemical assad, they’d be calling the person a warmonger, a Russian phobe, and not a nice guy.
Are we are twenty trillion in debt.
We are worse then broke, were about 100 trillion in the red.
( debt and unfunded liabilities).
The G7 demand, if it is true, is one Trump should not support.
We don’t want to be left in charge in Syria, nor can we ignore that were Russia to pull everything out of Syria, and Assad to lose to the “rebels”, the outcome is most likely to be an Islamist dominated government in Damascus.
We can carve out a safe Kurd dominated area in the North Of Syria, and leave that as our ally in the area, as we did the northern Kurd zone in Iraq under Saddam after the 1st Gulf War. Leave Damascus to Russia to deal with all the Islamists wanting control there.
Wow. Thanks for the info. Sounds terrifying.
Geez.
A FReeper made a sensible statement that the first step was to avoid getting clocked by the shockwave.
So I guess that was the reasoning behind it.
Wouldn’t make me feel so good as a kid knowing surviving might be worse
Pooawiddle scaood Boris could catch a ride with Tillerson. He ain’t skeered a no ruskies.
Civil defense was much mocked by the left, but did make much sense. Of course it’s not going to help with a close hit, but if a nuke lands 5 or 10 miles away then you have better prospects of survival. Ofc they love to say, “the survivors will envy the dead.” But would you like to have a chance, or not?
Of dying from radiation poisoning? No!!!
But I’m no physics genius. I don’t know what factors into getting/not getting it.
Like how far away the blast needs to be, the strength of the nuke, etc.
