Are school kids going to start practicing again to get under their desks?
I dont know if that is true from the 50s/60s or an urban legend :)
Cause I can’t see WHAT GOOD it would do!!
Trust me.
It’s true.
I did it.
Drop and cover. And, on occasion, class by class in perfectly straight and orderly lines, no talking, marching to the cafeteria ‘fallout shelter’ to sit in line, no talking, by class, reversing the process, no talking, after 15 minutes or so at the ‘all clear’ bell. And then the day proceeded as if nothing untoward had happened at all. Where were we? Oh yes, Johnny, it was your turn, what is the capital of Spain ? Sarah, the capital of Italy, please? And so it went.
It is true. During that time I was in grade school both in the states and in Europe as a military dependent. It was not so much as good but the first step to any chance of survival was to protect against the shock wave from the blast. That was the reason for duck and cover.
Civil defense was much mocked by the left, but did make much sense. Of course it’s not going to help with a close hit, but if a nuke lands 5 or 10 miles away then you have better prospects of survival. Ofc they love to say, “the survivors will envy the dead.” But would you like to have a chance, or not?
