Marge Swanson, a fat acceptance activist who helped pioneer the concept of thin privilege, is dead from a heart attack. She was 34 years old. Swanson championed the notion that weight and health have no inherent connection. She enjoyed dying her hair bright colors, wearing glasses and dating African American men.
Its not that Im thin-phobic, she once told an audience on a college campus. Its just that curvy women have been enslaved and victimized by capitalists for far too long and yeah, Im upset.
Swanson was born the middle of five children to a working class family in rural West Virginia. She was overweight as a child, and by her senior year of high school weighed over 350 pounds. She would later describe her teenage years as the most difficult period of her life.
People can be so intolerant of others, she later wrote. My classmates were such judgmental, privileged assholes.
In college, Swanson found acceptance among a group of intersectional feminists. First I learned to love myself, and that helped me become a happier person. Then I learned about white supremacy and thin privilege, and I got pissed.
After finishing college, Swanson moved into a studio apartment. She had trouble securing a full-time job due to systemic ableism, so she started a blog. Within a year, she had attracted a worldwide audience. Swanson became a big voice in the fat acceptance community, where she sought to raise awareness about the impact of fat phobia, which includes expressing concern over someones size (concern trolling) or associating obesity with health issues.
I dont want to compare struggles, but Harriet Tubman fought a similar battle, Swanson once told a reporter. Women in larger bodies are seriously underrepresented among athletes and models. Oppression and discrimination are the only logical reasons why this is occurring.
Some doctors, who Swanson called psychological terrorists, affirmed her message of self-acceptance but warned about the practice of endorsing unhealthy body types amidst skyrocketing obesity rates. Additional concerns were raised about the fat acceptance movements use of dangerously unscientific or misrepresented concepts, like the belief that weight and health have no clear relationship. The promotion of obesity, some have said, is no different than advocating for anorexia.
When people learn that Im 412 pounds, they assume that means Im inactive or unhealthy, she wrote in her blog last year. Im actually one of the most health conscious people youll ever meet. The myth that obesity has any relationship to health is absolutely ridiculous.
In 2015, Swanson was diagnosed with heart and gallbladder disease. The reality of her mortality, she claimed, only deepened her commitment to fight against weight related injustices.
I may have a few bad cells, but my health has not been affected, she told fans on her website. Thin privilege is a far greater menace to health than having a few extra curves.
Sure it’s not the Onion?
I saw a program yesterday on Home and Family that said stay away from cashew nuts, tomato skin and seeds (you can eat what’s left), kidney beans and some other beans. I found it interesting. They said the “numbness and finger and feet problems” would go away. The guy said they are the most poisonous foods on the planet. He said eating 5 uncooked kidney beans would kill you. I don’t know if any is true, but I found it interesting.
How dare anyone call that woman fat! She identifies as only weighing 110 lbs.
A truly agregious fat shaming story is that of Taylor Townsend. In 2012 Taylor was the #1 junior tennis player in the country and won the Juniors Australian open, and did this being overweight. She was in a USTA program created to coach and financially assist promising young players entering the professional circuit. Patrick McEnroe, an official with the USTA, cut her from the program because of her weight which prevented her from competing. Frankly, I thought is was terrible and thruthfully she was not fatter than the tennis Goddess, Serena Williams.
Low Carb High Fat and 95% of people would be down to their normal weight in a short time, like months or a year. I used to think weight loss was hard, but it’s not. Just get off that insulin cycle and burn fat, and it happens effortlessly, and no starving yourself and no feeling hungry.
By the way, I do love cashews! My go-to snack.
Her condition is salvation for America
Obesity will save Social Security and Medicare
Of course she was named Marge. She had to be.
Yes, satire.
But maybe the same fate awaits Trigglypuff.
Eggs? I think you meant to say give me all the whole chickens you have, w/skin.
Do you suppose athletic performance has something to do with the underrepresentation?
Or perhaps there is a reason that heart health statistics show strong correlation with obesity?
Facts are stubborn things.
She should have been a unicorn.
Good satire. Fooled me! Entirely too believable.
This person was mentally ill.
See, here is the problem: For something to be satire, it has to be in some way indistinguishable from reality.
Given the mentally ill pap we see emanating in a minute by minute stream from deranged liberals all over this country (and the world), this article is as indistinguishable from reality as the statement “boiling water is hot”.
This isn’t satire, because it cannot be reasonably distinguished from reality.
Sad and delusional. RIP.
While completely believable, this story comes from a satire site.
