This is how much it costs ‘Meals on Wheels’ to feed one elderly person for a year

The administration’s proposed cuts target the Department of Housing and Urban Development and call for the elimination of the $3 billion Community Development Block Grant, which helps fund programs including Meals on Wheels, which deliver food (and human interaction) to elderly, disabled and poor recipients. “The federal government has spent over $150 billion on this block grant since its inception in 1974, but the program is not well-targeted to the poorest populations and has not demonstrated results,”

The annual meal cost is $2,765 for 250 days

Since the program is mainly run by volunteers but it's still costing a whopping $11.06 per meal, well, folks, I think we know what the problem is. Somebody/s at the national government level is getting a nice big kickback. That $ amount feeds me 3 meals/day for two days. It'd be cheaper to deliver Kentucky Fried Chicken $5 lunches. Or Burger King 2 cheeseburgers/fries/drink for $3.29.

At the end of the article, it mentions the Headstart Program may be cut back. Good. It's nothing but a babysitting program for the EBT crowd.

Until recent days, grandma was provided for by her kin.

I have had friends on Meals on Wheels, part of the problem is that they are not made for elderly people who are usually on a restricted diet. Yet that is the majority of their customer base.

And you are right, at that price it is way overpriced for what they get.

I think your math is off? $11.06 per day is not bad, but still no excuse for the federal govt to be funding it.

I have a relative that has been on it before..she had to pay for her meal. I can’t remember how much but something like $5.00. She is not at poverty level and could afford it. Just disabled.

She got it in her head she didn’t want it anymore. Something about they forgot her drinks or didn’t bring her the right kind or something.

I see a value in this service. It does help people.

Pin a leftist down and they will admit that is the reason for it - to separate the kids from the parents of "those people".

I remember back when GWB wanted to let folks take ten percent of what they paid into SS to invest in government approved stocks in order to increase the amount of money they could receive on retirement. The Democrats and the MSNLSD bunch went ballistic and showed cartoons of Republicans pushing grandma down the stairs in her wheelchair.

Meals-on0-Wheels was originally started for shut-ins...disabled people who couldn’t get out to a soup kitchen program or cook their own meals at home...

then all sorts got in on the act...

Its free so lazy well abled people took advantage of it...and got the full food stamps as well...

plus if they didn’t like what was sent to them, they just fed it to the cat or dog...

there needs to be proof the people is totally disabled and unable to cook for themselves again...

and the cost needs to come out of their food stamps...

Food stamps need to be for only those who are truly needy and the EBT cards need to go...

I know old people who are on SS who get less than $20 a month in food stamps...and no MOW...

Just waiting for the sob sister stories. If any senior is mal nourished for any reason, it will be attempted murder by Trump.

It doesn’t matter to the mainstream media that we are impoverishing our future generations.

I read that the federal grant to Meals on Wheels only accounts for 3.3% of their budget.

Yep.If you have a grandparent in need and do nothing to help provide for them-you’re not much of a human being.

Lefties don’t think ahead because they expect US to pay for all of their needs.

My Dad was a wonderful and very smart man. After he was gone, there was great plenty to take care of Mom until she passed.

And enough left for his children and grandchildren to have a stake to build on.

A true conservative, through and through.

Thanks for the info bgill, we had a next door neighbor who passed two years ago who received meals on wheels. The wife and I visited often and helped where we could, she would often show us her meals that were delivered. They usually consisted of a piece of chicken, a scoop of pintos and greens and a piece of cornbread. You’re right the money is going somewhere!

Right. That’s what I read yesterday too. Just 3.3% of the MOW budget comes from the Feds. It won’t affect MOW.

Meals on Wheels notwithstanding, any nation that doesn’t honor the contributions from and wisdom of its elderly and murders it’s babies is heading for destruction.

My math is fine. Most of our homemade full dinners (meat and two sides) run about $2.50. Add in lighter breakfasts and lunch for $5/day. Yes, I’ve posted priced out meals here many times. If Burger King and KFC can do it for much less with $15/hr burger flippers, then the government with volunteers can certainly do a better job.

School lunches, for those parents who actually pay full price, run about $2.50.
