Berkeley previously housed an online library consisting of more than 20,000 videos of lectures. These videos were free and accessible to the public. But they are free no longer: next week, administrators will withdraw access to anyone who isn't a Berkeley student or professor.
Two employees of Gallaudet Universitya school for the deaf in Washington, D.C.filed a complaint with DOJ alleging that Berkeley's online content was inaccessible to the hearing-disabled community. After looking into the matter, DOJ determined that Berkeley had indeed violated the Americans with Disabilities Act
Berkeley had two choices: spend a fortune adding closed captioning to the videos, or remove them from public view. Cost-conscious administrators chose the latter option.

Actually, it makes perfect sense in complying with the ADA; one of the most horrid pieces of legislation ever signed into law.
This is one of those services that is mainly not directed at liberals, but to a largely conservative audience.
These are used by homeschoolers and as credits for some degrees in state colleges, as well as the vast number of conservatives that are self educated.
You don’t have to know much about “deaf culture” to recognize they are the “radical homosexuals” of disability.
ha ha, true, but there is a lot of educational content which has no particular political bent, I would hope..... plenty of courses in science, engineering, and math, and even in the humanities and social sciences there are still profs who don’t have to inject their opinions everywhere, I would hope....
when people can get away with their companion pigs on airplanes because they need it to help with their stress, its gone too far....
PTSD another scam for so many...
people on disability for carpal tunnel....
disability used to mean profound injuries or sickness....like terminal cancer, blindness, paraplegia, etc....

You mean the No-employer-in-his-right-mind-will-ever-hire-a-disabled-person-and-hack-lawyer-enrichment Act?
Surprised the “audibly challenged” community didn’t file a class action lawsuit against Harley Davidson. It’s so wrong that they’re deprived of enjoying that EFFING Harley sound. /s Better keep my big mouth shut or I’ll give them more dumb ideas.
Professors at small colleges are threatened by the existence of free video lectures by world-class professors.
MIT and Stanford also make videos available online.
The ADA was written in typically vague congressional language making it a lawyer's dream. It can be bent to mean almost anything. I despise Congress. They are not for average American people, just special interests who provide them their perfumed prince lifestyle.
Nobody carries a powerful general purpose computer capable to doing speech to text?
You don't know the half of it. There is an industry among lawyers who find some overweight beast and parade him around to restaurants and then sue the restaurants because they had no bathroom stall wide enough for the pig to relieve himself. Most restaurants settle and then renovate rather than going out of business. And each lawyer gets a third.

Egalitarianism is communism and always irrational. There is no such thing as “everyone is equal”. That is why Marxism is called “The Big Lie”. No two people are equal in all things.....it is NOT possible and by destroying the aspect of merit (perseverance, a virtue) , it destroys virtue in people. Virtue formation in childhood is necessary for Freedom. We all are unique (individualism vs. socialism) under American “law” with dignity and dehumanization—using humans as a Means to an End (Marxism)— is unconstitutional. US constitutional laws have to promote “public virtue” at all times (Montesquieu). Evil laws (sodomy/baby-killing) are unconstitutional and should be “null and void”. Just law can never promote evil, vile, irrational use of human beings-—ever.
The socialist Marxist system destroys virtue intentionally. Without virtue, people are happy slaves to the state. They are immoral and will take bribes, cheat, kill, etc., for the crumbs given out by the State.
There is no “right” to demand Berkeley to pay for a service to anyone—even the deaf. It is the misuse of “Just Law” and unconstitutional. That ADA is a Marxist instrument to destroy freedoms. Free people can not be forced to do “charity” by the government. Charity (a virtue) only exists with a virtuous people and WITHOUT FORCE. Force (government) destroys virtue (charity). Free Association is a Natural Right as is the Natural Right to private property.
Merit and ability is being denied or punished in all Marxist, socialist countries. It is dehumanizing and evil and that is why all our so-called “Just” laws which promote socialism or communism are unconstitutional and dehumanizing because they deny Truth (God) and Reality.
Being equal under the Law is the AMERICAN “egalitarianism”, meant by the Constitution and that ALL humans have dignity and worth and can never be used as a Means to an End (Marxism/socialism).
Marxism, socialism is dehumanizing always and makes slaves of the virtuous-—removes Reason from the System, and forces irrational unjust “laws” which are unconstitutional according to the US Constitution. BTW, our Constitution was destroyed by the Marxists (judges/lawyers/Wilson) and socialists in 1912. We need it restored our TRUE NATURAL RIGHTS and the Constitution, now.
There are deaf people who want deaf children to remain deaf, and not to get medical relief, because they have deaf culture or something.
There may be other reasons. Many of the more radical professors don’t want what they say to their students heard outside of the classroom. If some of it ever made public, the outcry would be enormous.
Gallaudet often makes a nuisance of itself.
I don’t know whether ADA is reasonable, but it should not be hard for Berkley to comply. I’ve gone through the process of creating captions to a video. It’s not too terribly difficult. And professional services charge about $1 per minute.
If Berkley was truly the bastion of educational excellence, compassion, and creativity, they should be able to recruit plenty of volunteers to get this done.
Why don’t men like Soros and Gates use their philanthropy for things like this rather than creating civil unrest or depopulating the planet?
Crabs in a bucket.
If one crab tries to climb out, the rest pull him back down.
Socialism: Creation of misery and distributing it around so everybody gets an equal share.
It is just plain stupid. MIT had lectures from some of their professors download able with subtitles.
Perhaps we can have a book burning because reading is unfair to the blind
Ever been deaf? You hearing are blessed, you can access almost anything in the world. We Deaf are shut out of everyday conversation and learning you hearing have. It is hard sometimes to understand the automatic captioning that videos have and they can be confusing because they don’t exactly caption what is said!!
Try an experiment. Turn the sound off on the TV and try to understand what is going on. Try lipreading those people on the screen. Bet you won’t get far. I wish that all of you could be deaf for one day to experience what it is like to be deaf!
