Fast-food restaurant chain Wendys will install self-order kiosks at 1,000 stores across the country by the end of 2017 to trim extra labor costs imposed by minimum wage hikes, NJ Advance Media reported. Wendys said it already offered to install kiosks in several locations last year and has received positive feedback from customers and franchisees who say they want more of the service.

I like the Sheetz kiosks, too, but someone still has to physically make the sandwich, and you have to take your slip to a human cashier to pay for it (not necessarily in that order).
Eventually there will be robots for those functions, too.
How’s that $15 dollars an hour working out for you?
Did you read the article you posted? Its to order only. Its a computer, a very light computer not a robot. It does not cook the food. It does not dispense food either.
Some company will soon be selling a stylus for use on these kiosks. Maybe existing computer tablet styluses will work.
Robots dont have an ATTITUDE.
And they dont carry Third Whirled Disease.
Robots cant pee or, spit in our food.
Robots dont have Protests!
Robots dont fight with customers.
Robots dont have Norovirus.
Robots dont have highly contagious Hepatitis A.
Please forgive a brief off topic rant. Has anyone else noticed that Panera’s now S**ks? They used to rapidly provide a good quantity of good food at a fair price. When they started I was very impressed by their operation which beat the carp out of the typical family restaurants like Friendly’s. My wife and I recently went into a Paneras and the first thing that changed was they now have “servers” which deliver the food to your table. They also ask if you want to tip them. I figured why not and added a $2 tip with my order. The prices for the Italian BMT and other items was also higher probably because they have gone all organic. After waiting an unusually long time the “server” put the order down and left. That’s all, and I never saw them again. Definitely not worth giving a tip. The food was also a disappointment. My Italian BMT was literally half the size it used to be with different bread and different components. I used to eat half at the place and eat the other half for lunch the next day. That wasnt really practical with the new version so I ate the whole thing. My wife ordered soup and a salad and they were also significantly downsized. Very disappointed and wont be going back.
Can’t immagine going in with a list of special orders.
I remember kiosks at a corporate Taco Bell 15 years ago as a test, SLOW!
One of the really big hassles of fast food in my opinion is just getting your order taken correctly. There is often a language barrier as most fast food workers have English as their second (or third) language). Also, they often give you the the feeling that you are hassling them when you have special request. For instance, I like my burgers plain with no condiments slathered all over them. A simple request but so often I ask for a plain burger and it still comes to me with that ketchup or whatever else they normally put on it.
I do see us eventually having fast food places that are entirely unmanned. You place your order and it is prepared and cooked for you on the spot with robots. Used to be the stuff of science fiction but I think we are getting close.
Different strokes for different people thus options will be available. I’ve seen these kiosk
in use in smaller chains for the last 10 years. They will either become the norm in larger
operations, fail or remain in the smaller companies. You pull up to the gasoline pump,
insert your card, pump your gas and go on. A lot of stores like Walmart use some
form of punch, pay and go. Take care.
Sheets is nearly 500 and growing, they serve everything from salads to pizza to burger fries, hot and cold subs, I like virtually nothing and yet love so many things I can’t decide, everything they MTO tastes great, very reasonable prices, always the choice from the kids sports teams and they do it exclusively with touch screen kiosks. I hate automated things like kiosks because i am so picky and special order everything, yet sheets kiosks work great and I don’t beleive they have ever messed up an order in 20 years. They truly have perfected the kiosks. Typical store has 8 or more so they deploy more people preparing food than taking orders, so even a pakcdd sheetz will get your food faster than any fasf food drivethru save maybe wendys and it’s fresh and tastes great. When I lived in D.C. fast-food joints were despicable, the less human interaction with those places the better.
Is there a no-ice-in-the-drink option on a kiosk, I wonder?
People that used to work in fast food joints are going to retrain as rocket surgeons. Then they will pay a lot of taxes.
Is there a no-ice-in-the-drink option on a kiosk, I wonder?
“Try our new *BIG ASS TACO*.....now with more *MOLECULES*”
you can only automate so much.
look at vending machines. each vending machine replace a person in a little cart selling snacks and drinks. we now have people who restock, drive supplies to restockers, and have vending where it would otherwise never be. (ie each floor of a hotel)
The people who design, build and maintain the kiosks pay taxes.
Sad that I say this, but it’s true:
I’d rather deal with a kiosk than an unhappy, miserable person with a chip on their shoulder.
Humanity is no more!
I’m thinking fetching drinks has been left to the customer at most joints; the amount of ice is your choice. Actually, it has been my experience that I need mucho ice to get the drink above room temp.
