I am not sure where this is but it is obviously a settling pond for socialist sludge. Who in the heck would pay more in tax than for the product????

Retailers need more sophisticated cash registers. Every customer should get a receipt that separates out the new tax, labeled as the "Mayor Jim Kenney soda tax."

I've argued for years that gasoline stations should do the same thing, with all taxes itemized on receipts and monthly credit card bills. Let customers see that tax is the bulk of what they are paying at the pump.

What a joke. The mayor says it’s up to the merchants whether they want to pass the charge on to their buyers. And since when is tax collection a choice??

If retailers don’t collect it from consumers, who did they think was going to pay this?

The Mayor and his liberal fools could give a rat’s ass about people’s health. It’s nothing more than another fleecing tax to pay for the failing programs that Philly refuses to end. Give Liberals a checkbook, and it’ll be overdrawn in a heart beat.

it is the choice of the retailers to pass the added costs on to their customers”

Golly gee, if they didn’t pass it on they’d lose .25 per sale. obviously the guy has worked for government all his life.

There’s a new rule at the Dining Car and Market along Frankford Avenue in Northeast Philadelphia: no more free soda refills. Owner Nancy Morozin says it’s just too expensive.

“We were paying about $71 a box for our soda product,” Morozin said, “and now we are paying $135 a box.”

...

A 12-pack of Lipton Diet Green Tea at Save-A-Lot in the city is now priced at $8.03, instead of the $4.99 it costed (sic) in December.

I followed links to pull these quotes. The tax is used to fund a few pet projects of the mayor and his allies. These projects include pre-K schools and “community improvement programs”, whatever that is, besides another slush fund for City Hall.

Please note that the tax is advertised as a tax on sugar products but also includes diet drinks. Why not all sugar products?

And the mayor blames businesses for passing on the tax. The tax is written and charged much the same as Europe's VAT taxes, bundled into the cost of the product during production and distribution.

It’s probably too much to dare to wonder if Philadelphians could conceive of recalling their mayor. But if they even thought about it, we’d know that another pendulum is really starting to swing back from the far left.

I've got more ways to generate money for Philly, just you wait and see. Taxes are fun, and we are only talking pennies here folks.

...story out of Philly this am about a street thug
beating up a 60 year old woman because the price
Increased of a sandwich....the thug had no problem squirting the beverage through a protective barrier which prompted the woman to come out to address him.....which lead to the beating...the cost thing is because of the “soda tax” not the sandwich. There will be other posts I’m sure.

Mayor institutes a tax then blames the soda distributers for raising prices to cover the city mandated cost. What a P.O.S. Has to be DemocRAT.

He’s just taking his cues from Harrisburg, which just raised the tax on gasoline refiners, but implies it is their choice to pass it on to consumers.

New Hampshire has been dogging out Mass. and Maine for years for taxes on beer booze and cigarettes for years .....you cross into their state and their are huge stores with tax-free booze and beer .....state congress people from Massachusetts drive up (with state owned cars) and buy in bulk...after taxing their own constituents to death on the same products....the guy Kenny is a moron but so are the voters in that area. Brew your own beer or even distill your own booze...its not hard and you will be surprised how it can pay for itself in time ....
