Fifty years ago, in the military, some white soldiers from the South and the North got to talking about racism. The northerners said they had no problem with blacks and had no hatred of them and could not understand the Southern attitude. I was a Westerner from the Rocky Mountains.

One of the Southern boys popped up and said, “In two years you will hate blacks because THEY (the blacks) will teach you to hate them!” (They used a different term for blacks)
The Northern boys just laughed, then we went to separate bases.

ONE YEAR later we met up at a new base, and those northern white boys put the Southern boys to shame with their extreme hatred of blacks. Something had happened and they would never tell us about it.

Thankfully I managed not to fall into that trap.
