(CNSNews.com) - Soft drinks were the top commodity bought by food stamp recipients shopping at outlets run by a single U.S. grocery retailer.
That is according to a new study released by the Food and Nutrition Service, the federal agency responsible for running the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as the food stamp program.
By contrast, milk was the top commodity bought from the same retailer by customers not on food stamps.
In calendar year 2011, according to the study, food stamp recipients spent approximately $357,700,000 buying soft drinks from an enterprise the study reveals only as a leading U.S. grocery retailer.
That was more than they spent on any other food commodityincluding milk ($253,700,000), ground beef ($201,000,000), bag snacks ($199,300,000) or candy-packaged ($96,200,000), which also ranked among the top purchases.

Potatoes and cabbage are good too.
Aid is supposed to keep one from starving, not supply luxuries. The poor want of course luxuries like anyone.
Still they should work for them.
YOu have to provide diapers, they are insanely expensive and little ones get beat when they poop their diapers because the diapers are so expensive. The diaper thing is a huge issue for little toddler’s safety.
None of the pre-sliced stuff though
Hell, I remember the retired cops and retired firemen in Erie gathering in a neighbor hood bar plotting out the places they were going for cheese. It was like a military maneuver. They got their cheese and sold it to all the bars in the whole area. Made for great cheeseburgers.
I don’t mind feeding people and I don’t give a crap what they eat either. I do mind corporate welfare.

President James Madison, Madison generally regarded as the father of the Constitution, had explained that the drafters of the Constitution did not intend for the GWC to be interpreted as a specific delegation of power, but merely as an introductory clause for the clauses that followed it in Section 8.
In fact, Madison had explained the GWC in his constitutionally required veto letter to Congress concerning the federal Public Works Act of 1817.
To refer the power in question to the clause "to provide for common defense and general welfare" would be contrary to the established and consistent rules of interpretation, as rendering the special and careful enumeration of powers which follow the clause nugatory and improper. Such a view of the Constitution would have the effect of giving to Congress a general power of legislation instead of the defined and limited one hitherto understood to belong to them, the terms "common defense and general welfare" embracing every object and act within the purview of a legislative trust. James Madison, Veto of federal public works bill, 1817
Note that the feds have likewise used the GWC to justify establish things like Social Security and Medicare for example.
However, the founders had expected to the states, not the feds, to tax and spend for such purposes.
"Our citizens have wisely formed themselves into one nation as to others and several States as among themselves. To the united nation belong our external and mutual relations; to each State, severally, the care of our persons, our property, our reputation and religious freedom [emphasis added]." --Thomas Jefferson: To Rhode Island Assembly, 1801.

I bet the libs would SCREAM if there was an EBT ban on Cokes .....
EBT cards cover a ton of nonessential garbage. Time to trim the list down to 20 staples.
Or local bars getting the for free then reselling them as mixed drinks. I see it every day here in Memphis. Shopping cart stacked with 15 or so cases. They won’t even cut us a break and buy 2 liter bottles.
So Trump can save 1/2 a billion in food stamps by banning 3 unhealthy spend items: Soda pop, bagged snacks (chips), ans candy.... after all it’s for the children’s health!
All the belching from drinking them also adds CO2 to the air. Get rid of sodas and beer. Stop Gorebull warming. Think of the children. /s
My grocers seafood /meat counter had one customer on the first of every month, buy 150.00 worth of Angus steaks...I asked him once why he spent all his EBT on steaks...That was the only way he could afford them..He used his money for everything else...That was 10 yeas ago and he was able to get 9-10 steaks every month...
