(CNSNews.com) - Soft drinks were the top commodity bought by food stamp recipients shopping at outlets run by a single U.S. grocery retailer.
That is according to a new study released by the Food and Nutrition Service, the federal agency responsible for running the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as the food stamp program.
By contrast, milk was the top commodity bought from the same retailer by customers not on food stamps.
In calendar year 2011, according to the study, food stamp recipients spent approximately $357,700,000 buying soft drinks from an enterprise the study reveals only as “a leading U.S. grocery retailer.”
That was more than they spent on any other “food” commodity—including milk ($253,700,000), ground beef ($201,000,000), “bag snacks” ($199,300,000) or “candy-packaged” ($96,200,000), which also ranked among the top purchases.

No, but the taxpayers should not be paying for it. The “N” in SNAP is for nutrition. There isn’t a pennies worth of nutrition in soft drinks.
The other thing that these leeches do is pay for their “groceries” with food stamps then roll out their cash for booze.

This is why people at Walmart are so effin fat.
I see it everytime I go to Walmart.
Grocery carts filled with processed food and fat azz people with skin palor that is gross.
And they spends hundreds at the checkout.
They could eat way more food, that would be healthy and still be a bit overweight, instead of being porcine pinnipeds.
If they can’t buy booze and cigarettes on Food Stamps, then they shouldn’t be allowed to purchase these really disgusting foods.
Besides, this should really should have been addressed in ObamaCare as well, to reduce medical expenses.
I know a retired surgeon who muses how it would have been more lucrative to have gone into the flavored sugar-water business.
Soft drinks should NOT be eligible for food stamps.

I buy junk food but I buy it with my own money.
I’ve said for a long time that food stamps should be limited to 4 areas
1. Fresh meats (Not deli)
2. Fresh vegetables
3. Fresh Fruit
4. Fresh dairy
No bread
No noodles
No packaged foods
No canned good
No diapers or paper goods
I saw a Latino man in Walmart one time. His cart was full to overflowing with Tortillas. They were piled higher than the man pushing the cart.
i figure he probably had a taco and burrito stand somewhere and was getting his “stock” cheaper at Walmart.

When I was on EBT, I always bought simple, basic food. Eggs, unsalted butter, cottage cheese, hard cheese (cheddar, swiss, jack), ground beef, chicken thighs, pork chops, rye bread (hard tack), and powdered milk. My one treat was shucked oysters in small jars, never costing more than $4. Fresh fruit and vegetables.
No sugar or sugar based products. Nothing containing corn syrup. The rye products were always pure rye, no wheat, as I am allergic to wheat.
As soon as my SS payments became regular, I stopped the EBT payments.

After looking at this list one realizes nobody needs this type of food. It is a grocery list for the lazy.

If I was king for a day, I would make ebt only usable in special stores that sell only the basics absolutely no frills or junk foods. Meat, eggs, milk, beans, produce, etc. in addition any escalade or otherwise luxury vehicle in the parking lot automatically triggers an audit of their need of such benefits
