Each day, millions of calls are placed to phone numbers that have been disconnected or are no longer in service. Everyone misdialsmen and women, rich and poor, blacks and whites.
Scott Richards wants to replace the familiar Your call cannot be completed as dialed message with a different one: Would you like to take a survey?
His is among a spate of ideas bubbling up for new ways to sample public opinion. The alternatives are coming because the traditional methodrandomly calling phone numbers again and again until someone answershas grown far more labor intensive and costly in recent years.

I don’t answer the phone unless I recognize the number.
So, no polls for me.
I never answer my landline . That’s what the answering machine is for...
Most calls these days leave no msg. F um
Two of us in my family have received about 10 total calls in the last several weeks and have hung up on each one. If I knew it was really a political survey and not an entro to asales call, I might respond. But because so many sales pitches are camouflaged as opinion surveys, including the letters I get from the GOP, I just won’t spend the time to find out.
Same here.
My phone tells me who is calling. I don’t answer if it’s an unfamiliar caller. I don’t think I’m alone on this.
I dropped the landline and went cellular about a decade ago. One nice thing about cellular is Caller ID. I use the Truecaller app to screen calls. If I don’t know who is calling, I do not answer. If ‘they’ want, they can leave a voice message.
I lie to pollsters.............
One wonders if the answers are real, or just what they want, and say yes we called x number of phones

A year or two ago, I took a call from a “political poll” and answered the first few questions... then I began to think about how you never really know who’s asking or how they will spin it, how the questions can be manipulated to skew the opposite of what you actually believe, etc. So I said “nevermind” and hung up. Now, I don’t pick up any call unless it’s a known person on the other end, landline OR cell. Whoever knows me will leave a message.
Yes, and this justifies any poll shenanigan the pollsters want to propagate. I think they will have the race widening in Crooked's favor as the election get closer. The "common wisdom" that the pollsters have to report honestly, to preserve thier reputation, that "wisdom" is a myth. It is false.
We LOVE NomoRobo!
Not one person I know here in FL, or my wife knows have been polled, and we are all for Trump.
I block robo calls. If you want to even get through, you have to have a person dial. At which point I’ll let the answering machine screen. Only if you pass caller id and the answering machine screen to you actually have a shot at talking to me.
All polls are nonsense and are probably archaic now.
Curious , but why do you lie to pollsters?
Wold it not make sense to show Trump winning in polls?
Curious , but why do you lie to pollsters?
Would it not make sense to show Trump winning in polls?
Is it just me or or does everyone first think “a CNN poll or NY Times Poll or a CBS poll....?????” What in the H**L would I believe about ANYTHING that any of these organizations put out?!! They lie about everthing and are admittedly in the tank for the Democrats so what relevance is a poll from any of them?
I never answer the phone unless I recognize the caller’s name or phone number.
