You are correct; when Creepy Dave signed with CBS, the network built him an apartment in the Ed Sullivan Theater, where his show was taped. It became Dave’s rumpus room, where he entertained female interns for years. I knew a few folks at CBS during that era (technicians and admin types—none worked on The Late Show). They said Letterman’s escapades were common knowledge at CBS, yet the network tolerated it. Birds of a liberal feather tend to flock together.
One of the strangest things I’ve seen on TV occurred during Letterman’s final show. He briefly introduced his wife and son, who were sitting in the audience. It had to be the shortest intro in TV history, and both looked extremely uncomfortable. Their home light must be just ducky.
Letterman was protected during his career because of his support from the media and support from CBS. He was also lucky; news of his serial philandering broke over the same weekend as the Tiger Woods scandal and reporters instantly shifted to the Woods controversy. Dave also gained sympathy because his lover’s boyfriend (a 60 Minutes producer, no less) tried to blackmail Letterman.
One telling moment: the day after Letterman’s last show, CBS sent crews into the theater and began disassembling his set, about 13 weeks before Stephen Colbert’s debut. The network’s rush to get rid of Dave tells you that a lot of folks at CBS were glad to see him go.
