Brendan Eich, Fired From Mozilla for Defending Marriage, Has a Brave New Web Browser
Stream ^ | 8/26/16 | Michael Brown

Do you remember the name Brendan Eich?

If you're internet savvy, you know him as the creator of JavaScript, the ubiquitous programming language, and you know him as the co-founder of Mozilla, which developed the Firefox browser. That makes him somewhat of a tech legend, and his legend will only increase with the release of his new browser, called Brave, which includes some cutting-edge enhancements. (More on that shortly.)

You'll also remember his name if you've been following the culture wars, since Eich was forced to resign as the CEO of Mozilla in 2014 because he committed the cardinal sin of donating $1,000 to California's Proposition 8 in 2008. (Proposition 8 was the pro-family bill that limited marriage to the union of one man and one woman.)

How dare he act in such an unenlightened way! said his enlightened employees at Mozilla. How dare he be so small-minded and exclusivistic! said his broad-minded and inclusivistic peers. (Sarcasm fully intended.) Surely a man like this is not worthy to be among us at Mozilla.

In reality, in all his years at Mozilla, no one had ever accused him of acting in a bigoted way, and the influential gay journalist Andrew Sullivan commented that "there is not a scintilla of evidence that he has ever discriminated against a single gay person at Mozilla" and so the whole episode "should disgust anyone interested in a tolerant and diverse society."

I downloaded it, but Norton365 warns it’s “unsafe”, and has removed the set-up files from my system.

I tried to use it exclusively for a while. It is screaming fast. Makes FR fly. My biggest problem with changing browsers for any reason is that I've got tons of accounts at different sites, for which I have passwords and such saved in FF. I also have bookmarks that go back to the very early days of the web. It's a serious pain to transfer everything over. The bookmarks will convert, but not the userids. I might try it again, but it is always a pain when you change a program that you've been using for so long. I also really dig some of my plugins and greasemonkey scripts.

“Soon, micropayments and better ads will give users and publishers a better deal.”

I am a dummy. What does the above mean?

If you are running a 15 year old OS it is unrealistic to expect it to handle brand new software.

You really need to think about moving on. A $350 laptop would give you a huge capability boost from what you are running now. I can’t blame you for wanting to avoid Win 10 but you can install Ubuntu Linux for an upgrade without Microsoft’s snoop ware and be able to use more modern software.

I use it on iPhone. I like it a lot because it is screaming fast and blocks all (okay, most) ads. I don’t have all my bookmarks over there yet, so I still use Safari too.

Recommended.

If you have a good computer repair store in your town, you can get a desktop/lapper and have them remove Win-10, and install an OEM copy of Win-7, for about $90-120. They have the CDs. They can move your XP stuff over to the new unit, but you will probably have to get drivers for some of it. There are plenty of sites for that.

“HE SHOULD JOIN FR.”

Good idea.
Btw, I haven’t tried ‘Brave’ but I love the name.

I’ve been running it in both Windows and Linux for about a month. It’s quite fast, and low overhead, but it isn’t yet ready for prime time because there are no add-ons, something they acknowledge will be addressed in future builds. One of the add-ons it no longer needs is a pop-up blocker, but I can’t abandon FF/Chrome for lack of functions available from add-ons like Video DownloadHelper and user script managers (GreaseMonkey/TamperMonkey).

Definitely a work in progress.

I’ve been using it off and on for a few weeks. It is fast, as advertised, but doesn’t have all the features that other browsers have.

That's been my experience. I'll come back when the later part of your sentence happens.
