...Ghostbusters has a reported production budget of $144 million and a print and advertising budget rumored to be around $100 million (it may be much more). So, at a minimum, the distributor needs to rake in about $250 million at the box office to break even.
But heres the thing the author of the Houston Press piece seems to have momentarily forgotten. The distributor only collects about half of the money that comes in to the box office. The exact amount varies from film to film and depends on which weekend were talking about but, in general, the distributor takes a little more than half of the box office (this piece from 2011 says 55%). The figure is slightly less overseas so 50% is a good rule of thumb.
What this means is that in order to make back all the money spent producing and advertising the Ghostbusters reboot, the film needs to make around $500 million at the global box office.

I think there are ideas, just no one willing to take the risk to take a shot with them. They want formula so the bean counters can better project for the market instead of the ups and downs that come with true creative genius. Best new studio in ages was Pixar who finally cashed in and now their stuff isn’t nearly as good as it was when they started.
Want to see good movies - look for the smaller studios. Yes production values are not as sharp and crisp as the big studios, but the stories are much better.

All female with the requisite angry Black woman I can’t imagine why its not doing well
I guess I’m in the minority here. I saw Ghostbusters this past weekend and enjoyed it. I thought it was a funny reboot. My favorite part was looking for all the cameos from the original movie (I counted six) - there was one of Egon!
Everyone’s trashing Leslie Jones - I thought she was good as the street-smart member of the crew. The scene where she was rescuing Holtzmann from the window and then smacking the ghost out of Abby was hilarious!
Oh well - I liked it.
Good. Heard it went full Hitlery.
Who cares?
We saw it Sunday. It’s awful.
“Fat and ugly lesbian women aren’t as good a draw as fat and ugly straight men.”
I hope that holds true in the presidential election.
Spencer, Tracy and Kong! Now THEY were the original Ghostbusters!!
From the moment the trailer aired during the Superbowl it looked like a whole lotta suck just like that Lone Ranger movie starring Johnny Depp with facepaint and a chicken on his head.
They were buying influence with the press with all of that paid advertising.
Ghostbusters 2016 = emperor’s new clothes
You can’t tell the truth about it, the masses will hound you
230 comments at the original HP site, but Jef with one ‘f’ did his job and generated click bait revenue at the dying HoustonPress site.
Now that I hear they're disrespecting me and my choices (how very accepting and tolerant of them! {snort})... There is no chance in hades I'll go see it. None.
No wonder the first trailer posted on GoogTube has almost a million dislikes which is a record.
I would rather have a root canal than watch that GBII.
