Retailers have blamed the weather, slow job growth and millennials for their poor results this past year, but a new study claims that more than 20 percent of Americans are simply too poor to shop.
These 26 million Americans are juggling two to three jobs, earning just around $27,000 a year and supporting two to four children and exist largely under the radar, according to Americas Research Group, which has been tracking consumer shopping trends since 1979.

And lest we forget about all those iPhones.
There are ways to plan families without abortion or birth control many Catholics use these methods and do not have children they can NOT afford!!!

Ahh, genius, what does 'agian' mean?
Like I said; ignorant, low IQ, country bumpkin.
Please learn the proper use of our English language. Then come back and try to speak. (...but not to me.)
My daughter didn’t qualify for any benefits for her or her baby with that income. Take that back. They did subsidize their health insurance.
These are "poor" people and so they must be on every form of welfare. They don't realize that at that income they do not qualify for most benefits. Or as one guy inferred that if they are working two or three jobs they are working 120 hours a week.
They don't understand that the 40 hour work week for the working poor is gone. 28 hours is the new standard. And you have to be careful to try to fit your two 28 hour jobs together because usually these jobs do not have set schedules so your work hours shift from week to week.
And of course there are weeks when they cut your hours and instead of working 28 you are working 20.
But hey, don't complain. There is an illegal who is willing to work under a stolen social security number for the allotted hours then off the books and paid out of the register for another 29 hours while he collects welfare under three other SS numbers. If you complain they will hire him.
I can afford to shop but we’ve cut back on shopping because our house is filled with too much bleepin’ crap already.
So a few days ago I was doing maintenance on my front lawn when a furniture truck pulls up next door, and a couple guys carry some bureaus and other bedroom furniture into my neighbor's home. Neighbor daughter in her early 30s is a bum, drinks and smokes constantly on the porch while on her cell phone. Collects welfare for her kids. Anyway, her father (retired) begins yelling at her "What the hell did you buy that for! You have no money!".
She retorts "But I wanted it!". Dad yells back "How are you going to pay for it?". She responds "He said he was going to give me some money!". I don't know who "he" is, she flitting between different "boyfriends".
Anyway, thousands of millenials like that, no job, no future, sponging off Dad and boyfriends. But they want stuff!
Lot quicker to get your shopping and errands completed when you don’t have any extra money. Only two stops now - grocery store and gas for the car.
Hasn’t changed much for the last two years and we have survived just fine.
Another math-challenged reporter.
26 million is 12% of the US population (322 million), not 20%.
These stores are going out of business because of Amazon, not transgender restrooms.
How much crap do people need?
I live in Sarasota and the ONLY, and I mean the ONLY people I see shopping on the weekends are HISPANICS. I NEVER hear English spoken.......weird.
It’s an unchristian thing for a society to allow people to pump out kids from multiple dads who don’t pay any support for them. It is an unchristian thing to commit fornication and pump out kids without being married! Hence the built in strain on our social nets upon a society given over to sin...our society either repents or it will be destroyed...generally by our own actions but let’s not forget what the bible says in terms of God raising up nations and throwing them down!
These people are likely on expanded medicaid or heavily subsidized on the health exchanges. If they live in a non expanded medicaid state, they can get a hardship waiver. The kids might be covered under a Chip program.
I am disgusted by the arrogant “I’ve got mine-so F everyone else,if they aren’t as lucky as me they must be worthless” crowd i see here.
Obamacare is the ruinination of millions of family budgets.Millions are like myself in that obamacare raised insurance premiums to an UNAFFORDABLE level even with the subsidy and of course if you don’t buy the crap plan through your employer that employer saves his portion of the insurance because you certainly don’t get it as a pay raise. Then come tax time unc’ obama takes your refund for the crime of being unable to afford insurance. The “bronze” insurance we can supposedly afford is worthless with its huge deductible and co-pays.The “silver” plan is truly beyond our means.
I know people, black and white ,who work two part-time jobsfor a total of 56-60 hours and receive no benefits. They don’t have iphones.
And to Mr. Apple and his ilk, I’ll bet my IQ (and that of a few million of those poor people) is as high or higher than yours. It is certain our compassion for struggling fellow humans is higher.
Bravo and well said.
I refer to it as being "upper poor". For a retiree such as myself with no debts, I joke about the upper poor life style. It's really quite doable. But for a family? It's difficult.
These are the ones we should be praising. They're the ones who shouldn't be getting minimum wage, but because there are unending new waves of non-citizen labor, they are lucky to make more than $10 an hour.
We don't turn things around in the US until the working poor are better off than the crowd that lives off government freebees.
You know what? They're pretty much incredible people.
