Retailers have blamed the weather, slow job growth and millennials for their poor results this past year, but a new study claims that more than 20 percent of Americans are simply too poor to shop.
These 26 million Americans are juggling two to three jobs, earning just around $27,000 a year and supporting two to four children and exist largely under the radar, according to Americas Research Group, which has been tracking consumer shopping trends since 1979.

Well, it must be different where you live. Arizona is a right to work state.
You can thank Obamacare. People were willing to work 40 or more hours per week without health insurance benefits but now, their hours have been cut back but now they MUST buy health insurance.
I just have a VERY HARD TIME understanding WHY when your income is 27,000 a year you have 4 kids you can’t afford!!!!
This is the true cost of cheap imports.
All forms of welfare are not reported as income.
I fear these are people who have to take 2-3 clerk or restaurant jobs because none are full time any longer. Some reasonable amount likely refuse welfare out of pride and choose to work the jobs.
Long-term recipients don't want to work too much or they lose their benefits.
Is it really I have not been to up hat way since my folks passed is playa vista all done
What job? When I graduated high school 40+ years ago, I could have gotten a job with the railroad, or with any one of three major steel mills in my area. Start at the bottom (the labor gang) and work your way up. Those jobs are all gone now.
We need to get those jobs back. Go Trump!

NY Post is fairer than most NY rags, but that assertion is bizarre. Who works 3 jobs to make $13/hour for the given 8 hour work day?
They may not have made this little in the past, yet have a strong work ethic.
Many rural towns no longer have above minimum wage jobs, due to the general collapse of work options from the economy and China, etc. Even miners are sliding into this situation.
Yup! All of these “protests” by people receiving free government handouts show that they have way too much free time on their hands. Trump can put them back to work. No work, no food.
I just can’t take any money away from our food budget. I have to buy most kids clothes second hand. It’s hard out there.
Plenty do. See my other posts.
Traditional Americans aren’t welcome in stores - we got their message.
Penney, Macy, Starbucks and now Target are all ‘oh so liberal and above it all’... Fine. They can market to the few elites left. We don’t want to go there anyhow... of course elites shop at better places.
Guess it sucks to be them....
Maybe they’ll go out of business like newspapers and magazines that feel they’re too good for the little people too. I’m so tired of these people and their excuses... I hardly care enough to bother typing this..
I have a dumb phone.
I buy ammo. I get socks and underwear for Christmas. I’m covered.
I,and quite a few of my friends and acquantinances, have horribly old phones like my $19.99 MotoE Tracfone and $15 to $45 monthly plans with other carriers.Perhaps because it is our own money being used to pay for them,No doubt urban areas have a different profile.
Maybe they used to have a $50,000 job 6-8 years ago. Millions of people have lost their jobs and are unemployed or under employed.
These people HAVE jobs, they aren’t making enough even with two to three jobs in the household. 2008 slammed the middle class family and they are not recovering. Between Obama care and taxes they are drowning.

I’m sorry, but this would be virtually impossible today.
.
“Stupid article. My kids are all minimalists, its in vogue. They dont like/want stuff.”
Yeah, wait until they get a little older and STILL don’t have anything.
