Donald Trump on Monday spent part of his July 4th with Sen. Joni Ernst -- fueling speculation that the Iowa freshman senator could be on the short list of his vice presidential picks.
Ernst told Fox News they had a "good conversation," adding, "I will continue to share my insights with Donald about the need to strengthen our economy, keep our nation safe, and ensure America is always a strong, stabilizing force around the globe."
Earlier, Trump tweeted, "I look forward to meeting (Ernst) today in New Jersey. She has done a great job as Senator of Iowa!"

Not ready. We worked hard enough to win that seat. We are being played.
I agree with your entire post, but especially the above text.
That reminds me of the time Mrs. Submareener was having trouble getting some hot-shot software engineers to do what she told them to do. That all changed when I quietly informed them that “You know she has gelded horses, don’t you?” Not a peep out of them after that. ;-)
ROFL.....
I agree that victory is the priority and Joni Ernst has a lot of positives. She won Iowa statewide by 8+ points in 2014. Granted it was an off year election, nonetheless Trump needs to improve his numbers with women voters. If she could help him do that, and gain Iowa, she would be a great VP selection.
Either way, he gets to form a relationship with an up and coming Senator and gives the dishonest media something to speculate about.
60% conservative review voting record. Not good.
I think I just got hit by a stray reply. ;-)
Who’s even heard from Ernst since her attention grabbing campaign commercials? Who knows where she stands on the major issues of immigration and trade?
Identity politics getting mixed into this decision, I’m afraid.
Iowa Senator Joni Ernst also did not sign the brief supporting the 26 states that sued Barack Obama over his unconstitutional executive amnesty. Brook Hougesen, a spokeswoman for Ernst, said:
Senator Ernst is watching this case closely. She opposes President Obamas executive amnesty, and believes we must continue working to put an end to his overreach.
Ernst becomes more of a RINO with each passing day and its apparent that shes already learned the Washington art of giving meaningless platitudes. Whatever happened to the women who ran that political ad that implied she was going to go to Washington to castrate business-as-usual as she would castrate the pigs on her farm?
The line on Joni is that she came in as a conservative and has turned into a rino with only 60% ratings on several places that rate conservatives.
White man, successful, determined to carry on the Trump legacy.
Appointing some because they are a woman or of some race, and barring them because they are not, are each both stupid and wasteful.
Newt has the knowledge and knows the ropes around dc.
I should have made my self clear on what I meant by Trump II.
I don’t mean another member of the Trump family, let’s not have that mistake again.
I want another guy as wise and fearless as The Donald, and someone determined to carry on as Donald would after he leaves office.
Someone very unlike GHW Bush.
And, I agree with you that Trump can win the Presidency without any VP help.
I fear Newt is too old. I can see Mr. Trump choosing someone younger and doing on-the-job training so his choice can take over in 4 or 8 years and keep the rebuilding project going. I think Newt is too old for that, even though I do love MOST of his comments. He’d be a great adviser to both Trump and Pence.
And we lost Iowa last time. While I think she helps him with women voters, even Iowa’s 6 EV’s will be crucial in November.
The election will likely be very close, and every EV will matter.
With a few exceptions, women are not suited for leadership roles.
Ask anyone who has had a woman supervisor.
I’m in step with Ann Coulter on this issue.
Put Mccain endorser Ernst on the ticket in July so McCain can win his August Primary in Arizona?
Newt knows his way around the Hill and he knows exactly where the bodies are buried.
