Top Republicans believe Paul Ryan will be nominee
Washington Post ^ | 4/4/16 | Mike Allen

On the eve of the Wisconsin primaries, top Republicans are becoming increasingly vocal about their long-held belief that Speaker Paul Ryan will wind up as the nominee, perhaps on the fourth ballot at a chaotic Cleveland convention.

One of the nation’s best-wired Republicans, with an enviable prediction record for this cycle, sees a 60 percent chance of a convention deadlock and a 90 percent chance that delegates turn to Ryan — ergo, a 54 percent chance that Ryan, who’ll start the third week of July as chairman of the Republican National Convention, will end it as the nominee.

Why would the Trump-supporting Trump delegates give up, and not the Cruz delegates?

You don’t think they’re as committed as, say, Reagan delegates were?

This is arrogance and pompousness on full public display, and it’s neither convincing nor appealing.

Try another tact.

CA....

My guy is backed by Sarah Palin... et al...

You left Ted Nugent off your rather lengthy list of Trump supporters.

Most candidates accept endorsements from wherever they come and they have no control over endorsements- like with David Duke for Trump.

How is Cruz supposed to get the nomination again?

Cruz is an ACTIVE PARTICIPANT in helping this to happen. I wish the Cruz kool-aid drinkers would wake up and see the writing on the wall. Without Trump it's going to four to eight more years, if not forever, of the country lurching to the left. More taxes, more spending, no fiscal control, liberal court justices.

more and more here are saying it it Trump or no one.
People have just had enough of the games and lies by Washington.

Look at Kasich, wins one state and then camps out in the north east.
Cruz has one just over a third to Trump, has less than 2 millions votes, came third in 3 swing states and never win a county in VA, FL which we need to win.
He will now go to the Dakotas., and CA and camp out there.
This is a plan by the GOP to stop Trump and the will of the voter.

People loom at them and think power and corruption and people are fed up of their crap.

And I expect no less from a Cruz-bot who is perfectly willing to let his candidate hide behind iCarly’s skirt to answer those tough questions like “Have you ever been unfaithful to your wife?”

Trump didn’t hire David Duke’s entire staff and his criminal brother to work for him.

It is alright keep saying Trump should step out and yet have no facts, no nothing but embarrassment for ones self

More reason why Trump must quit now and pledge his delegates to Cruz!

Serious question...are you serious? Cruz has packed his campaign with establishment players and establishment money. He has no chance at getting the nomination. His only purpose is trying to stop Trump from getting the nomination. And the only reason for that is exactly what the "top republicans" are trying to bring about....putting Ryan in.

I am being arrogant and pompous for suggesting that after Cruz outmaneuvers Trump to get his guys in as Trump delegates that more Trump delegates may move to Cruz (and also to the GOPe, since they’re playing similar games) than the other way around?

Do you realize that Trump is my preferred candidate?

True—but to little practical difference. If anything fear is the more visceral motivator for those who perceive their livelihood to be at stake.

Cruz has already shown he plays the Establishment/big donor, pro-TPA/amnesty game while talking publicly for the “the base” as much as any of them.

In the vernacular, this was a d!ck, chickensh!t move. A man answers his own questions. Carly was OBVIOUSLY prepared to intercede because she had to look down to her cue card to cite the three reasons “why that doesn’t matter.”

Ted is not the man I ever believed him to be. MY candidate doesn’t hide behind a skirt, doesn’t throw in the with likes of the Bushs, and doesn’t consort with maniacs like Glenn Beck.... MY CANDIDATE is NOT Cruz.

I am beginning to believe that the GOP leadership has outed itself as the greatest enemy to the middle class, Constitutional government, and American exceptionalism.

We need a concerted effort to primary out all but a few republicans.

IF the convention ABSOLUTELY and POSITIVELY can’t push the primary vote leader over the line to the nomination and has to look elsewhere, paging Lt. Col Allen West.

He is the ONLY one I can think of that fits the bill as a outsider to republican establishment, a proven leader, solid background, and is a no-nonsense kind of guy that people could rally behind with great enthusiasm.

nail on head

when a man is asked has ever cheated in his wife he does not look dumb and then lets another woman in to answer for him.
He stands there, he raises his head, he looks in their eyes and states NO.

Never in my lifetime has so many people become unglued because the frontrunner is not their guy. Where was the #neverRomney movement, oh that’s right, on election day, when millions stayed home. RAFAEL EDUARDO CRUZ WILL NEVER BE PRESIDENT. Deal with it. You people need to move stage 5 of the Kubler-Ross scale. Acceptance.

Believe it or not, despite the extreme vitriol that has been going on I have been getting mostly positive responses back from Cruz supporters when I suggest that we need to start working together. Most already realize that Cruz is not going to get a majority of delegates before the convention. Many do not seem to realize that it will be mathematically impossible for Cruz to reach a majority in just two or three weeks.

Their big hope is that Trump will not reach a majority before the convention and on the “second ballot” that Cruz will win. Realistically, this is not going to happen, and deep down they know it. The establishment support that Cruz is currently getting will just poof, disappear once the establishment does not need him anymore. Carl Rove, Paul Ryan, Mitt Romney, Reince Priebus, Lindsay Graham, Mitch McConnell and the rest have all said repeatedly that Cruz will not get the nomination at the convention. Some have changed their tune in the last week or two, but this is complete BS. Cruz is not establishment.

Romney campaigned with Kasich in Ohio and then a couple days later he was campaigning with Cruz in Utah. In Tennessee the GOP not only wouldn’t allow Trump and Cruz supporters to be delegates, they wouldn’t even allow them in the party meeting. I know that it will be the same where I live and have been active in local politics. It will be the same all across the country. The way that convention delegates are picked has everything to do with who has been a longtime party supporter and has the deepest pockets and has almost nothing to do with which candidate they are initially obligated to support. If none of the candidates reaches a majority before the convention then the party bosses will pick the nominee. It will not be Cruz or Trump. Anyone who believes otherwise is deluding themselves.

We need to start working together now. The time for insults and bludgeoning one another is over. I am actually more guilty than most, but the tone of our efforts must change now. We need everyone on board. It no longer matters who started it, who is the smartest, most moral, or who is the most conservative. The primary is too far along. At this point everyone needs to take a hard look at the likely outcome.

The concerns of Cruz supporters must be addressed and they must be treated with courtesy and respect. Trump is going to need to give them something in return for their support. He knows this and I think that he will. In the last few days he has already signaled that he is going to be taking the high road in the future. This is a good start. He should also praise Cruz’s intellect and conservative credentials and promise to nominate him to take Scalia’s place on the Supreme Court.

Once Cruz no longer has any mathematical way to get a majority of the delegates before the convention he should acknowledge this. I pray that Cruz will come to the realization that the cabal of GOP establishment that have recently started supporting him will not be loyal at the convention. He is young, his intellect is spectacular, he played the game well, there will be other opportunities, but if the establishment is allowed to steal the nomination at the convention it will mean disaster for the country.
