Unexpected and Gruesome Battle of 1250 BC Involved 4,000 Men from Across Northern Europe

A battlefield of 3,250 years ago in Germany is yielding remains of wounded warriors, wooden clubs, spear points, flint and bronze arrowheads and bronze knives and swords. The gruesome scene, frozen in time by peat, is unlike anything else from the Bronze Age in Northern Europe, where, researchers thought, large-scale warfare didn’t begin until later. Analysis of the remains of the 130 men, most between ages 20 and 30, found so far shows some may have been from hundreds of kilometers away—Poland, Holland, Scandinavia and Southern Europe.

The hand-to-hand combat of the battle, which may have involved thousands of people and may have taken place in just one day, was brutal, according to an article about archaeological research at the Tollense site in Science magazine. And it involved horses. Today, although the researchers believe they’ve unearthed just 2 to 3 percent of the battlefield, they have found the remains of the humans and of five horses.

Wow. Thanks for the post.

To sustain armies that size would have required somewhat advanced economic systems and division of labor.

The brutality is sobering.

BTTT.

Age was determined by carbon 14 analysis of wooden objects like clubs.

We were driving through Central America about 50 years ago and saw a big police presence up on a hillside with a big crowd. We asked someone what it was, they said it was a machete fight, probably over land, women or cattle.

Determining a person’s age at death based on their skeleton is the same if they died 3,000 years ago or 30 years ago.

Well, I would think that usually when people are fighting over land they are actually fighting over the resources of that land that will enable their families, their tribe/group/nation to thrive and produce young.

A thought and a contrarian geological viewpoint:
We cannot determine the age of a rock w/any degree of accuracy by radio-carbon dating for the very basic reason that we do not know the radioactive elements present in the rock at formation nor have we been able to monitor the way these elements have changed, if at all, over time.

While the Greeks gave us eternal Laws and Rules in Mathematics and Physics; as well as the likes of Copernicus, Galileo, Newton and Von Leibniz, among other giants; we moderns have produced Theories such as Evolution and Relativity.

It’s obvious to me that there is an inverse relationship between the rigor of the scientific proof and the zealotry of its acolytes.

But aging a person based on their skeleton isn’t done with carbon 14 or anything like that. It is based on dentition and bone development.

Determination of age[edit]

The determination of an individual’s age by anthropologists depends on whether or not the individual was an adult or a child. The determination of the age of children, under the age of 21, is usually performed by examining the teeth.[29] When teeth are not available, children can be aged based on which growth plates are sealed. The tibia plate seals around age 16 or 17 in girls and around 18 or 19 in boys. The clavicle is the last bone to complete growth and the plate is sealed around age 25.[30] In addition, if a complete skeleton is available anthropologists can count the number of bones. While adults have 206 bones, the bones of a child have not yet fused resulting in a much higher number.

The aging of adult skeletons is not as straightforward as aging a child’s skeleton as the skeleton changes little once adulthood is reached.[31] One possible way to estimate the age of an adult skeleton is to look at bone osteons under a microscope. New osteons are constantly formed by bone marrow even after the bones stop growing. Younger adults have fewer and larger osteons while older adults have smaller and more osteon fragments.[30] Another potential method for determining the age of an adult skeleton is to look for arthritis indicators on the bones. Arthritis will cause noticeable rounding of the bones.[32] The degree of rounding from arthritis coupled with the size and number of osteons can help an anthropologist narrow down a potential age range for the individual.

Modern universities likely try to feminize the past as they want to the future to be. Such large warfare was the fault of the ancestors of George Bush, and Climate Change.
