Thousands of Massachusetts Democrats have denounced their party affiliations since January 1 to jump across the aisle and join the ranks of Independent or Republicans.
Nearly 20,000 Bay State Democrats, or 1.3 percent of the party's Masachussetts population, left to vote in the Republican primary Tuesday. More than 16,300 of that group have "unenrolled" or become Independent voters, while 3,500 have joined the GOP.
Mass. Secretary of State William Glavin attributed the switches to the "Trump phenomenon." The billionaire candidate has a significant lead over fellow top contenders Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz in recent state polls.
"The tenor of the Republican campaign has been completely different from what we've seen in prior Republican presidential campaigns," Galvin said. "You have to look no farther than the viewership for some of the televised debates.

That’s frickin’ hilarious.
Dim voters are always more disciplined than we are. They don’t stay home if the nominee is not exactly who they wanted. Blacks and unions stay on the plantation.
But who is to say this is permanent. They can switch to vote Trump in the primary then vote for the Dem nominee in Nov.
But but I thought Obummer was the great one, the Democrat great leader...!
Now that Hillary is a lock, the Uniparty will have her people vote for her old buddy Trump in open primaries.
How sweet would it be if Hillary’s “legacy” was the most resounding political defeat in the history of the Republic?
How many of then are responding to the Globe’s call for Democrats to vote for Kasich to stop Trump? We will see.
Is this operation chaos? Do they intend to vote for Trump, then go back to their old ways, or leave permanently? Any ideas?
When Romney attacked Trump about the KKK thingy yesterday, I wanted to shout at the TV “Hypocrite !!!” but I was in the Trump office at the time...
Romney was a member of the Mormons before 1978 and agreed with their racism...
Blacks could not be members of the Mormons...their religious literature to this day still has verses that say blacks are evil etc...
To this day no black man or non-white has held any position of high office...
There was a native American years ago who was fairly high up but they fired him or pushed him out...
In 1978 the Mormon leaders voted to allow the blacks to join because Jimmy Carter threatened them...
to punish Jimmy Carter the Mormons voted for Ronnie Reagan in 1980...
Willard who believed that blacks weren’t worth spit is now accusing Trump of bigotry ???
WOW! Fantastic!
TRUMP is going to win in a landslide in the general.
It was comical, indeed. David Duke had his fifteen minutes like a generation ago. Who gives a crap about the idiot?
Like Romney and the contraception question, just another media effort to stir the sh!t.
I want to see a one-on-one between Brit & Omarosa (one of Trump's MANY black spokespersons)
She was a Hillary supporter, but when Trump ran, she jumped ship.
She even scares me a little.
Do they want Hillary and are just playing in our primary? Or do they want Teump?
LOL! Well, what sayeth YOU, Washi?
Bkmrk.
You must be unaware of their massive break with party along Bernie lines.
The resultant problem would be the unions really putting the screws on people in November in response to a strong Trump primary win, and people not voting for him in the general as a result. I've talked to union guys who are quite convinced that somehow, someway, the union bigwigs get a list of how members voted, by name...And in Massachusetts, I wouldn't be particularly shocked if they really do.
“I really, really doubt this is a change in allegiance. It is a political play to sabotage the republican nomination process.”
I echo your thoughts
A common Democrat tactic in primaries - Dems switch parties and vote Republican for the least electable/easiest to beat candidate, then switch back before the General and vote Democrat.
Do not count your chickens before the eggs hatch.
That’s just the GOPe talking.
A fair amount of blacks do support Trump, as do Hispanics.
