Donald Trump's Widening Lane to the GOP Nomination

As the Iowa Caucuses near and the Republican presidential field enters cage-match mode, there has been some movement in "the three lanes" within the party. To recap, those three lanes are the social conservative lane, the establishment lane and the Donald Trump lane. In short, the latest NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll suggests that the establishment lane is narrowing and Mr. Trump is the biggest beneficiary.

The lanes in the GOP that we have discussed are not solid, stable groupings. They are made up of voters that hold mixed and sometimes contradictory views. There are, for instance, supporters of establishment candidates who have tea party leanings or who also consider themselves to be "values voters."

Here's what seems to be happening in the latest NBC/News Wall Street Journal poll. Voter groups that have supported the GOP's main establishment candidates are beginning to peel off to join other candidates, particularly Mr. Trump.

You can see that peeling away most clearly when you look at changes in support between December and January using the five-way field of Mr. Trump, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and former neurosurgeon Ben Carson. So, Mr. Trump and Mr. Cruz are up and the other three are all down a bit.

“To recap, those three lanes are the social conservative lane, the establishment lane and the Donald Trump lane.”

$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Good analogy. And Trump’s clarification of his pro-life stance widens his lane, and narrows the social conservative lane.

Maybe Trump is not a pro-life firebrand, but he will sign any pro-life legislation that a Republican Congress sends his way.

“The numbers here suggest the establishment lane is being pared down to its most basic set of voters, its core.”

What/Who are the “core” voters of the GOPe? Mindless idiots that barely understand politics? Corrupt politicians? Lobbyists?

Amazing how the chattering class is constantly trying to figure out and explain what is gong on, but they expect us to hang on their every word and follow their directions.

They are finally figuring out Trump is for real! We the people figured that out when he first came down the escalator. Since then, they have been telling us why it wasn't happening shouldn't happen and couldn't happen.

So who really is the smartest one in the room? Well its not the professionals of the chattering class. Looks more like its Donald Trump.

Yes, yes.

I also felt the same "tingle up my leg" when I heard Trump announce.

I said to myself, "Here's a guy who speaks in plain English. What he says makes sense. And he's speaking to me as a person. He's like a Dad talking to his sons and daughters."

And all the politicians are merely clowns in suits. With Trump I get a man of action. Heck, even his words are short, to the point, and action-oriented.
