RNC member urges party to rally against Trump
Politico ^ | 01/15/16 | Alex Isenstadt

A Republican National Committeeman delivered a call-to-arms aimed at Donald Trump during a closed-door GOP meeting on Thursday, urging his colleagues to take a forceful stand against those who he said were destroying the party's brand.

At a breakfast at the RNC's winter meeting, Holland Redfield, an RNC committeeman who represents the minority-rich Virgin Islands, rose to address party chairman Reince Priebus. In the five-minute impromptu speech, a video recording of which Redfield provided to POLITICO, Redfield did not explicitly mention Trump's name. But he made clear that angry voices in the party posed a grave threat to the GOP's future, and expressed alarm at what he described as crushing pressure to play nice.

"You can argue with me, but we're almost terrorized as members of our party. 'Shut up. Toe the line, embrace each other, and let's go forward.' I understand that. But there is a limit to loyalty. I am loyal to this party by speaking out on these very issues," he said at the private breakfast meeting.

At one point, Redfield essentially argued that those in the room have been held hostage by Trump's threat to run as a third-party candidate if the party hierarchy treats him unfairly.

"As a party we owe it to ourselves to speak up, and not let the tail wag the dog, and not let someone say, all of a sudden, 'If you don't play my game, then I'm running as an independent."

They apparently have plenty of friends and allies on FR.

Holland that pledge you made Trump take works for him too.

If Trump wins and you don’t honor that pledge, its just more of the promises you establishment guys broke when you went to Washington and gave Obama every vote from the GOP he needed to increase deficits to fund his agenda.

Breaking the trust of the base gave you the Trump “problem”
Going after the Tea Party and conservatives gave Trump his supporters votes.

“angry voices in the party”

If you are not angry, you are not paying attention.

“What a pack of pansy assed idiots.”

One man and one woman on that committee came from your state, Utah. At your state convention, the delegates elected a woman and a man to be on that committee. Do you know who your two committee members are? You will find their names on the Utah Republican Party website. Do you think the two from your state are pansy assed idiots?

I know the two from my state and they are not pansy assed idiots.

urging his colleagues to take a forceful stand against those who he said were destroying the party's brand.

If they want to know who is "destroying the party's brand" they can look in the mirror.

They’re terrified that they may have to finally deliver on some of their rhetoric, and afraid of losing their safe, cushy desk jobs.

I am actually impressed by how restrained Trump has been, considering what he is up against and the shape this country is in.

The debt is soaring, we’re losing jobs, taxes are up for everyone, the military has been gutted, a Muslim in the White House - we’re in a HUGE mess.

We need a fighter who can win the two-front war against Islam and its allies in the American left!

You know, if they really think the angry voices in the GOP are sometimes over the top, they ought to look in the mirror.

Things got like this because many in the party valued ensuring their own re-election by moving to the middle over doing what they were elected to do. And in doing so, they repeatedly ignored the complaints of those who elected them.

They ought to try understanding the anger and addressing the causes rather than blaming their constituents.

At least most of the candidates (other than JEB! and Kasich), have figured out that you have to acknowledge the legitimacy of the anger and try to address the underlying problems. But much of Congress and the party officialdom are still clueless. Their reactions are making it more likely that one of the candidates they dislike will win the election. What is depressing is that the party leadership is apparently too clueless/dumb to realize that.
