A quarter of Republicans think White House hopeful Ted Cruz is disqualified to serve as U.S. president because he was born in Canada to an American mother, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.Republican voters nearly mirror independents and the broader electorate in their belief that Cruz cannot hold the White House, with 27 percent of all voters and 28 percent of independents responding he should be disqualified.
Cruz, a U.S. Senator from Texas who was born to a U.S. citizen mother and Cuban father in Calgary, Alberta, has brushed aside the attacks about his eligibility as pure politics. But the questions could hamper his ability to rally the broad Republican support he would need to win the party's nomination to run for the presidency in November's election.
Only 47 percent of all voters surveyed responded that they thought Cruz is qualified to be president with regard to his citizenship, with 26 percent saying they were not sure.
The poll was taken from Jan. 7 to Jan. 14, before questions about Cruz's eligibility became one of the most heated moments of Thursday night's Republican primary debate.

If Trump makes it past the primary I will likely support him, but I have a grave concern that Trump will be changing his tune after the Republican primary.
My concern is that Trump, being the smart guy he is, is simply playing to the galleries and were he to get elected it is very, very easy for me to see this guy going all kinds of squishy.
Because Liberals depend on Conservatives’ rule-keeping nature and use it as a weapon. They will pound on this relentlessly, not because it is true, but because they believe we will project our feelings about Obama on him.
Happens all the time.
The donettes must be feeling pretty down in the trumps this morning after their giant orange muppet got shellacked in the debates last night - so they’re beating on the eligibility can again.
LOL that cover sums up what people in the rest of the country believe people from New York City are like.
We have had a lesson ALREADY in what ignoring the Constitution’s NATURAL-BORN CITIZIN clause means.
Are you saying that's not logically valid?
What did he say that you didn’t like?
If you find yourself agreeing with the Daily News, check your premises.
I think so too. It's rude and in your face rude. But if I'm Cruz, I'd rather not see the "go back to Canada" part. Now Cruz needs to regain lost ground on two fronts. He needs to be a uniter, and he needs to make his Canada BC a non-issue.
Hey, here is a question.
Who would you trust to pick a Supreme Court Judge that is a strict Constitutionalist?
Face it, this will be the most important task of the next president.
Sarcasm/ Ah, who cares? We can just bring a bunch of judges together and play The Apprentice \sarcasm
You may think that but the headline is clear "Quarter of Republicans" Trumpsters or not.
Add to that: "28 percent of independents responding he should be disqualified." How's that going to help him in the General or the primaries for that matter?
Also: "26 percent saying they were not sure." You can't count on these as die hard Cruz supporters.
It's time to move on.
The only thing that would clear this up is a Supreme Court ruling.
Arguing ‘experts’ do him no good and distracts from his campaigning.
Big mistake not to have put this into court already- maybe by a friendly challenge from the Texas Secretary of State.
I believe that Cruz is eligible [after I learned that Breitbart’s bogus drive-by report was debunked], but when we claim something we believe, it doesn’t mean a blasted thing.
If 1/4 of republicans aren’t sure, then ALL democrats WILL be sure that he is not eligible. And independents? A gamble.
[More coming up. Sure I posted more on this than you care to read.]
I’m not agreeing with it. Just observing what it says. And I will confess to ingnorance on the usual track of the rag. I don’t read any paper or pundit regularly. My contact with the press is mostly what is posted at FR, and following loacl stories like the Waco biker shootout. Otherwise my contact is driven by google’s choices, not random, but not selected by me.
The Cruz attack on Trump being “a New Yorker” has backfired massively, and destroyed his (Cruz) chance at becoming Trump running mate for VPUS. Cruz is toast....no, burnt toast!!! Not too bright upstairs. Did you notice how quickly Nikkin Haley bowed at the feet of Donald Trump...begging for forgiveness for her mouthing off at the SOTU speech??? She will never listen to Mitch McConnell & Paul Ryan, ever again!!! McConnell shoould be thrown out today...as GOP leader in the Senate. He and Ryan are firmly in bed with Obama & Clinton!!!
GO DONALD TRUMP!!!! And......thanks.....Mr. Trump for the free tickets in Iowa, to the great movie “13 Hours” which depicts how Obama, Clinton and the Democrat low life vermin...stood by while our USA ambassador and three other Americans were slaughtered by Libyan terrorists!!!
You need to reread the blurb. Only 47% think he’s qualified. Twenty-six percent aren’t sure, the rest: not qualified.
But he has also precluded himself from choosing Cruz as his VP, unless he can perform a convincing "declaratory judgment" in court to satisfy everyone. But even that may not be enough.
You mean the GOP-E quarter?
The Establishment Republicans, those snakes, are influential among low-information voters, especially when they stab us in the back.
And creeps like Professor Laurence Tribe are influential over the senate AND over half of the House.
Even Rush says natural born status is a complex constitutional matter.
If 1/4 of republicans aren’t sure, the democrats WILL be sure. They will quote McStain, they will quote Majority Leader Mc-Conman. They will quote Rand Paul. And they will quote others.
Only two ways to clear this up ...
[You know already what I’ll post next. FRegards ....]
Yup.
