Students from Winnipeg, Canada recently discovered a stash of 800-year-old seeds while on an archaeological dig. The mysterious seeds, once planted, grew into a rare species of squash that has been extinct for hundreds of years. While we don't know if the seeds themselves were safe to eat, the squash that they harvested was absolutely delicious. Check out the images below to see the rare gourd for yourself and learn more about this discovery.

Recommend this as the

They'll eat anything.

If only Winnipeg was in Saskatchewan instead of Manitoba, that would be Sasquash.

Nonsense! We’ve gotten lots of those. Plant your zuccinni too close to pumpkins or similar plants and you get cross pollening.

odd wording to call them rare and extinct in the same paragraph but still a pretty cool story. They may be rare today in that they just started growing them but if they were extinct then they were a bit past rare.

Similar thing happened years ago at a dig in the Anasazi cliff dwellings in Arizona. They found a pot with some beans in it that were unknown species. Planted them and found them to be great for the specific area in that they can be cooked without soaking and at lower temps in mountain air. Also very protein rich and ‘sweet’ to the taste.
They are now available commercially at most stores as Anasazi beans and I highly recommend them.

You say that, but I’d love to do a taste test to see if there is difference...
I would bet there is...
All of our food has been modified genetically to a certain degree today...

Based on speculation of Anasazi cannibalism, all you’d need to add is a nice chianti.

How do they know they werenât GMO seeds? ALL seeds are GMO seeds.
If they differ from their wild ancestor--and all crops grown for agricultural purposes do--then they are GMO.

I can think of at least 2 other fad foods that came from urns or crocks that were stored away hundreds of years ago. I guess seeds are the new archeological treasure find.
