Why are FReepers rallying around a crony socialist?

Posted on 12/24/2015 7:07:28 AM PST by dangus

Donald Trump has an excuse for funding Hillary Clinton's election to the U.S. Senate from New York: That's how crony socialism is done. You pay off elected officials to become their crony, then you get special consideration for your real estate deals. Please FReepers, explain to me how this isn't precisely what we are trying to STOP in Washington? Do you know what I don't hear coming from Trump? "I'm going to put an end to such games." Rather, it seems like he is proud of how he has played the game, considers it is how he rose to the top, and in his generous self-appraisal, figures that anything that helped him make more of his billions must be good.

He also favors socialized medicine. Not just a mandated level of services (Obamacare), but the government paying for universal, single-payer health care. This isn't an opinion from 2000. This is from his current campaign:

Scott Pelley: How do you fix it?

Donald Trump: There’s many different ways, by the way. Everybody’s got to be covered. This is an un-Republican thing for me to say because a lot of times they say, “No, no, the lower 25 percent that can’t afford private. But–”

Scott Pelley: Universal health care.

Donald Trump: I am going to take care of everybody. I don’t care if it costs me votes or not. Everybody’s going to be taken care of much better than they’re taken care of now.

Scott Pelley: The uninsured person is going to be taken care of. How? How?

Donald Trump: They’re going to be taken care of. I would make a deal with existing hospitals to take care of people. And, you know what, if this is probably–

Scott Pelley: Make a deal? Who pays for it?

Donald Trump: –the government’s gonna pay for it.

Trump isn't a conservative. He's a narcissist who can't help telling the crowds what he thinks they want to hear. And so what we get in the Republican debates is an unelectable charicature of conservatism. One moment he's for keeping all Muslims out; the next he's only for keeping Islamofascists out. Well, duh. One moment, he's against the invasion of America by millions of communist Chinese and socialist Mexicans, the next, he's endorsing touchback amnesty.

Wait... you didn't know Trump favors granting citizenship to just about any red Chinese or Mexican who asks for it? "We have a lot of good people, they’ve been here and they've done a good job. It’s a tough situation and in some cases they haven’t been good people, and there have been some problems. The good ones we’ll expedite."

That's right... he's going to expedite illegal aliens already in the United States so that they can come right back into the United States.

Building a wall and then expediting illegal aliens in a touchback amnesty might help solve the security risks of uncontrolled illegal aliens, but how exactly are we going to simultaneously "expedite" them and screen them for terrorist connections? More than that, the fear that there might be terrorists among illegal aliens is one of the relatively minor issues I have with illegal aliens. I don't want my country invaded by Red Chinese and Mexican Reconquistadoras, driving down wages and consuming far more government services that they pay for.

But then we come to the issue that will make Donald Trump utterly, totally, completely unelectable. Unlike most socialists, Trump believes that American middle-class wages are too high. He has said this at almost every debate, and no rival or moderator has called him out on it. But with the Republicans already having a tough sell with Romney's legendary 47% who live off the government, can Republicans tell the vast majority of the remainder of Americans, "Oh, by the way, we'd be happy if you had way less money?"

Please, people, don't be like that Democrat socialite who couldn't believe Nixon won because she didn't know anyone who voted Republican. Trump is getting 96% of the coverage of Republican candidates, so he is who everyone is talking about. But don't confuse the volume of attention with electability. In a head-to-head poll matchup, Trump loses to Bernie Sanders in a landslide.

I've always thought the mainstream Republicans were fools to refuse to stand up for conservative values in the hope of winning an election. It's not just about watering down your beliefs to win over the middle; it's about giving people in the middle reason to think you'll do something about the conservative concerns they do have, and giving the base a reason to come out to vote. But is nominating someone who makes 58% of Americans think he is just an obnoxious blowhard the solution?

Please, if you think I'm an idiot, don't just tell me I'm an idiot. Tell me where you think I'm wrong. Tell me why you don't believe Trump won't pass a touchback amnesty into law, or won't institute socialized medicine. Show me data to say how he has a prayer of winning. I really do want a reason to believe that we're not about piss away our best chance at electing a conservative president since Ronald Reagan.

Pauline Kael was a film critic, not a socialite.

I don’t deny there is risk. He has to remain true to his present words. The only concrete indicators I have that he is for real, is the vociferousness of his Elitist enemies.

The OP’s points seem to be diminished by refutations downthread...

Like I said, this is a dice throw, but I think it’s all we’ve realistically got.

If it were not for Trump getting in we would most likely have Jeb! as the leader and be discussing exactly how he would implement amnesty. The Jeb! strategy of sucking the donor money away from the other candidates would likely have worked. The GOPe would be happy with things and President Clinton would be a done deal because Jeb! could never beat Hillary. We would be looking at another 4 years of status quo. That is what you would prefer? I think that Trump has done a great service by showing candidates how to beat the media and eposing the GOPe for what they are.

do not expect a single response defending what you mention above....but your motives, your ties to Rove, your mama, and everything else will be fair game.

What's the point of having to explain the extent of the Media/Uniparty control of the presidential election process to someone who's been on Free Republic since 2003?

If they don't get it by now, they'll NEVER get it.

You have an excuse. You've only been here since 2010. :)

“Trump has never given to Hillary or to other federal candidates.”

Oh, just a $100,000 donation to the Clinton Foundation.

Also, he donated mainly to the Democratic senate and congressional campaign committees, not individual candidates, so your carefully parsed answer, while technically correct, leaves out vital information that paints a very different picture.

Maybe I just need a few DT fans to private message me and tell me ‘we know he isn’t conservative, we know he has a very ‘mixed’ political past (I am being polite), but I think he would shake things up in a good way’.

I don’t know that I can vote for DT in the general. But I can vote against a socialist every time.

Thanks.

I can honestly say I do not know what I would do. But not out of being a sore loser as some other nitwit posited. I truly believe with every fiber of my being that trump would go down as one of the biggest disasters to ever befall this country. I believe that ultimately there will be a hair’s breadth of difference between he and Hillary.

Being a Conservative is being guided by some deeply held convictions...that we are endowed by our Creator, that the government that governs least governs best, that power centrally consolidated the farthest away from the people is power to be distrusted, feared and fought against. Donald Trumps own statements show that he believes none of those.

"Because it is not about Socialist vs. Capitalist any more."

Speak for yourself. Until the last Marxist is pushing up daisies, it's always going to be about that for me.

It's okay, I understand the penchant to keep that wartime mindset. I was a Cold War Baby myself. However, I won't make the mistake of some generals in World War I and World War II. I won't fight the last war. I will fight, instead, the current one.

“Why are FReepers rallying around a crony socialist?”

At this point, Cruz supporters, it’s almost nearing time for some of you to be placed openly on the same side of the Democrats and the GOPe.

You are really skirting a fine line of echoing their talking points and secretly cheering their efforts on, and it is fast turning off many of us to even considering supporting Cruz if he actually manages to win the nomination.

Because what they do to Trump (supposedly a Democrat socialist), is what they will do to Cruz. Some of you are to stupid and snobbish to realize it, or realize that Trump is the only reason Cruz is even where he is today.

No one will EVER be conservative enough for FReepers. Patton could be resurrected and nominated and people would STILL rail against him saying he is too "crony capitalist" or "socialist" or some other gripe. Trump and/or Cruz would be ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE better than Bernie Sanders or Hitlery...

People who can deny that simple fact are either 1. disingenuous, or 2. willfully ignorant

Light yeas ahead? Where are all his accomplishments in the Senate? Why is he hated by his fellow senators? Why is he attached to the CoC and supports more H1B “workers” to take jobs from Americans?
His”Brilliance” goes right along with Mitch McConnell against his own advisers and then cries like a baby when he’s caught and makes excuses that McConnell lied. His Brilliance did not show him something he should have known all along....he was in the senate long enough to know.....that McConnell is Obama’s pal and will do anything to get Obama what he wants.I would a hundred times more prefer to have Trump negotiating for me and for this country than a stiff shirt who can’t even read his own cohorts in crime.

This FReeper certainly is not. I think Trump would be a disaster, such a disaster, that I can tell you, believe me.

Please, if you think I'm an idiot, don't just tell me I'm an idiot. Tell me where you think I'm wrong.

You're wrong because you think the people supporting Trump's campaign don't know what they are doing.

For most of us, Trump is not our first choice (I prefer Cruz).

The fact is: If Trump drops out, or Cruz takes the lead, the media will pulverize Cruz in a matter of days. That's a fact. Otherwise, Sarah Palin would have been president long before today.

Trump is looking to win with outlandish promises, with style over substance.

And Cruz promises what? Oh yeah, he’s going to return the government to “constitutional principals”....just dont ask how....and dont pay attention that he cant even get a majority of his fellow senators to support him.

Just shut up because he’s the “true conservative christian”...and did you know he memorized the constitution when he was 13???!?!?

You can easily say that he is looking to win with “sentimentality over substance”.

The above is so true. I was freepmailed long ago that this would be done to me, looking at every post I ever made, trumpees using trump’s wonderful vocabulary with words I won’t repeat plus the usual as mentioned.
Thanks for the fight. You are far from alone. There are MANY CRUZER’S WHO AVOID THE FOOD FIGHT! Because trumpees buy every lie he tells, don’t care he has changed positions more times any politician in history, acts like a whiny brat and as you point out cronyism is his first art form. So many are being played for fools.
But Cruz will soon be swimming the moat with a knife in his teeth and he knows how to fight. I am so looking forward to it.
