Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

I’m not going to comment until it’s verified that this “reporter” is telling the truth.
Cruz DIDN'T say that Trump said anything about a registry.
Ted should have FIRST said, "You know better, Trump didn't say any such thing.
Cruz is supposed to keep track in real time of what Trump says? Seriously? As if the world revolves around Trump? Some of you really need to be a little more objective.
When asked...
Cruz said that he liked Trump.
Cruz said that he doesn't like registries.
Cruz said nothing about what he thought Trump's position was.
Cruz said the right two separate things.
Funny, just a few months ago you were cheering him on.
Odd, that.
“I’m a big fan of Donald Trump’s, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens,” Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The “First Amendment protects religious liberty.”
They have whiny baby fever. Why bother to read when you can dump on someone for Trump?
Sure just like “I can see Russia from my house” didn’t hurt
Sarah Palin. If the Uniparty (all candidates but Trump) thinks
they can hurt Trump with a lie they will lie their a$$s off.
The First Amendment protects religious liberty.
This is the first exception that I have taken to any of Ted’s statements for he should know better. Doesn’t he know that the Supreme Court ruled that the Bill of Rights had no teeth.
Here, a statement about religious freedom to the barbarians while a woman owning a bakery was hunted down like a rabid dog and actually forced to serve a wedding cake to two demented queers.
You were all for him a few months ago.
Another one.
Fido does exactly what he complains about and takes the bait.
“Cruz should know better than to accept some stupid reporter premise.”
I agree. This is one of the few times that Cruz has been in error. I hope Ted comes out with a correction.
COMMON SENSE governed the writing of the Constitution! If you believe in the constitution, you believe in Common Sense.
A pamphlet called Common Sense written by Thomas Paine played a large part in the revolt by the colonists against the rule of Great Britain. More exactly against George 3rd.
Cruz shows brilliance in his lawyering. He does NOT show brilliance in every day matters that govern the economics of this country. He is a lawyer and he is a politician. He needs to get some Common Sense to fully develop his potential. He needs “seasoning.” in the REAL World.
Unbelievable...and ironic is your comment.
Why am I not surprised. Some of you Trump supporters have lost all sense of objectivity.
The Knuckle Dragger Brigade is comprised of thick headed individuals who have no Common Sense! Do YOU belong?
He’s my second to Trump. Always has been.
Exactly!
I read what the Texas Tribune said he said. And.. what the Texas Tribune said Trump said (and... Trump did not say that).
Got no problem with Cruz in the text of what he said and know that he believes, but if he was replying in the context and in answer to (in acceptance to) that Trump said this— then he is mistaken in that context and in addressing it to Trump. This is politics. I get it.
Mine fields of foolish little sh##t reporters who set people up. And they have (they think) set Cruz up as well... in fact all repubs.
The candidate field (the wussies- Yeb, Graham, Kasich etc.) has all responded in “quelle horreur” to the Norquist muzzie supporters of the GOPe, and sound remarkably like Hitlery’s speech in front of CAIR this week. And it is ALL bull crap.
What did Cruz say, exactly, that he needs to correct? That he likes Trump? Or that he doesn't like registries?
The Aztec religious beliefs caused them to celebrate human sacrifice. Does Cruz believe we should protect their religious liberty too? How about VooDoo?
How about determining whether Muslim is a cult rather than a religion. Then talk about freedom of religion. Then whatever the answer is, and there is one, the question has not been raised, state whether one allows for freedom of religion or at all compatible with America, its constitution
Just call it a “jihadist sympathizer rally”..
