With little luck in his quest for the Democratic presidential nomination so far, former Virginia Sen. Jim Webb is considering an independent bid in 2016, his campaign said Monday.

A press release entitled, "Jim Webb To Consider Independent Run" said the candidate will hold a press conference Tuesday "to discuss his candidacy, the campaign and his views of the political parties in the current election cycle."

Difficult to ignore his literary excursions that demanded the Clinton defense.

It's like whatshisname (Arlen Specter) from Pennsylvania who got primaried by Toomey in 2010 and then ran as a Democrat.

He said something to the effect [I loosely paraphrase with some interpretational license here] that he

".. couldn't let the wishes of his ungrateful rabid conservative constituents destroy all that he had built up as a Senator....."

I like Jim Webb’s views on the growing threat of China but other than that I don’t see anything else that I agree with.

You don’t have to agree with him on anything. I don’t care if he believes we are going to be invaded by Martians, as long as he can siphon votes from the DemocRAT nominee. As close as elections are these days, 1 or 2 percent would help.

You think about wine and an independent run for some two-bit party-surfing Democrat while the souls of a million aborted babies cry out for justice?

Hold up there golux! We all hate the fact that little babies are being killed in the womb. It's a national abomination. SO, WHY THE HELL HAVEN'T YOU STOPPED IT? Don't rebuke people on here for the comments with an unrelated topic when apparently you're not doing a damn thing to stop abortions. They've been performed legally since the early 70's. Got a solution or you just like to bitch?

George Wallace didn’t hve any trouble getting on the ballot in all 50 states, nor did John Anderson, nor Ross Perot. Webb is at least a well known as John Anderson was.

History shows that independent candidacies tend to hurt the incumbent party. Wallace hurt Humphrey, although he was “supposed” to hurt Nixon. Anderson damaged Carter. Perot may have damaged Bush, but Bush shot himself in the foot. (Some studies say he damaged Clinton as much as Bush, or almost as much.)

There seems to be a paranoia among Republibots that any independent automatically hurts the Republicans. the historical record does not bear that out.

any one that runs for president that is not the republican or the democrat is merely pretending to run. they are a pretender

any one that votes for the pretender is pretending to vote

Yes, but the hope is that he draws Democrat votes away from the Republican. I don’t want Jim Webb to be President (well, more than I would Hillary to be President, but that isn’t saying anything).

If he could indirectly deliver Virginia into the R-column, that alone would be YUGE.

I watched the Hillary Show and thought Webb won going away. But of course I thought he won because he sounded like a republican on every answer he gave except saying he didn’t care if illegals got free instate tuition.

You can’t just look at the historical trends relative to the incumbent party. You end up with correlation, but not necessarily causation.

A third party run hurts the candidate that the third party draws votes from. Nader hurt Gore not because Gore happened to be the incumbent, but because he drew in voters that were never going to vote for Bush but we’re wiiling, in a two candidate race, to hold their noses and vote for Gore.

Webb is running as a centrist. The Democrats have, since 2000 and Nader, shown an ability to really lock down and hold their voters together. And to maximize turnout within the left half of their own party.

So logically Webb draws centrists who would vote for the Republican.

What’s needed is to get Sanders to run third party. He’d draw exclusively from the Dem nominee’s bucket.

Just one guy’s opinion but if the GOP nominates Bush or Rubio, this conservative would happily vote for Webb

Update: Webb is about to have a press conference to announce he WILL run as an Independent.

YAY! Split the liberal vote, Jimmy boy!

He wrote about someone holding a small boy by his feet while the boy serviced the man in the fiction book.

The guy is a total scum bag just like all so called Blue Dog Democrats...total scum bag

In the closing days of his campaign against George Allen ...Allen went with this but reportedly to a backlash.. Webb said it was only fiction, but perhaps based on something from the country in his book, but why did he want it in his fiction book?

I dont like Webb because he supported the anti Christian abortion/homosexual celebrating Democrat party.

He is a phony baloney loser and imo is not fit for office

it’s not paranoia when the person who would be independent is basically right wing. The other word you used I don’t know what it means but I noticed that people on this board like to insult Republicans which is like eating their own. I don’t get it

He does fit with them. He’s a nutjob left-winger. I don’t know where this revisionist history is coming from where Webb is concerned and seeing FReepers fall for him is appalling.
