Oakland councilwoman focuses on police exam to broaden diversity

An Oakland City Council member who wants the Police Department to hire more African American officers has focused her attention on the written exam for new applicants — which is the point where many candidates get eliminated.

It is racist to require applicants meet the job requirements and be able to perform the duties of the job.

Even more frightening is the “Diverse Ones” notoriously poor impulse control.

Which has a way of spreading around by way of comparative excusing, too. Soft bigotry of lowered expectations.

As it stands, many jurisdictions impose an UPPER LIMIT on IQ for police officers, where people with an IQ over about 115 are rejected.

The official reason is that high-IQ people would become "bored" with police work. My suspicion is that chopping off the high-IQ part of the spectrum allows them to have an adequate number of black applicants in the selection pool, without too-obviously imposing quotas.

Keep in mind that they will be picking their detectives and police executives from a pool of people whose IQ is limited to about 115.

Diversity will always trump character, competency, training and qualifications.

That's true. It has pretty much become routine. Employers can't legally say "No White Males Need Apply," so their practice is -- and they often advertise it -- that "Women and Minorities Are Encouraged to Apply."

Actually you are right. There are some very wealthy sections of Oakland up in the hills. Also Piedmont is a city completely surrounded by Oakland. Two bedroom bungalows there cost more than a million. The kids all look like they could be in a Ralph Lauren ad.

They don't, because there are no white people in Oakland. So the message is that the written test itself is racist, because there are no "locals" who can pass it. The congresswoman doesn't mean that there are not enough blacks on the OPD, she means there are not enough functional illiterates on the OPD, and thus the OPD is not reflective of the local population.

The racial percentages of general population v. police officers looks to very close so don’t see what her problem is. Lowering the standards on the written exam isn’t going to get the results she wants. If an officer can’t write a decent report, cases will fall apart and criminals will be set free.

IOW, she’s saying blacks are too stupid to write a coherent case report. That’s racist! Someone should file on her.

Shouldn’t the Lakers be more diverse then? It should be about half Latino with less than ten percent black.

Once the nation's police forces are negrified, a generation or two “up the road” it will be hell for whites. Whites will face black cops, black prosecutors and black judges. Add minority juries and you get the picture. The thing that is sick is the willingness with which whites are going down the road to destruction./p>
