For most people becoming blind would be a living nightmare - but for Jewel Shuping it was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream.
Jewel has Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID), a condition in which able-bodied people believe they are meant to be disabled.
Her need to lose her sight was so strong that in 2006 she decided to blind herself - by having a sympathetic psychologist pour DRAIN CLEANER into her eyes.
According to Jewel, her fascination with blindness began early in childhood.
She said: "When I was young my mother would find me walking in the halls at night, when I was three or four years old.

Determined to make her dream a reality, Jewel found a psychologist willing to help her become blind ... The psychologist put in numbing eyedrops - acquired by Jewel during a special visit to Canada - and then a couple of drops of drain cleaner in each eye.
"But all I could think was 'I am going blind, it is going to be okay."...
Jewel, 30, from North Carolina, said: "When I woke up the following day I was joyful...
"I really feel this is the way I was supposed to be born, that I should have been blind from birth.
Jewel originally told her family it had been an accident, but they eventually found out the truth - causing both her mother and sister to cut contact.
"When there's nobody around you who feels the same way, you start to think that you're crazy. But I don't think I'm crazy, I just have a disorder."
Jewel is now sharing her story to help raise public awareness of BIID and to encourage people with the condition to seek professional help.

The psychologist who did the maiming "for" this woman should be in jail. As should all the surgeons who have performed genital mutilation on mentally ill people who want to "transition" into a person of the other sex.

Sounds like a great psychologist. What’s the name? Is he/she/it taking new clients? Shyeesh! Some humans never cease to amaze me as to their insanity.
She should have just closed her eyes and said she was blind. Then everybody would be obliged to pretend it was so. Isn’t that how things work now?

There are people who feel they should be minus a limb. It’s a particular limb, not just any. PET scans of their brains reveal irregularities in the region for feeling or controlling that limb. So, sick, undoubtedly. But probably more physically sick than people who want their penis cut off. (Those people tend to commit suicide in spectacular percentages compared to those who don’t have their penis cut off.)
I doubt anybody in previous centuries ever acted on their feelings simply because surviving was so much more difficult. Surely anybody who really worked for a living would need all their limbs and thus ignore whatever drives today’s mentally ill. But today most people can survive without working at all. So they get to indulge their craziness.

I have a disorder too. This is a violent dislike of paying taxes to support people like this on welfare. I think my disorder should be accommodated as well.
Oliver Sacks (a fraud in my opinion) wrote extensively about this. People who refused to recognize an arm or a leg. I don’t think he recommended this shrink’s solution, though.
What a shame. She could have gotten the attention she craved just by declaring herself a lesbian.
She sought professional help and the professional was a fraud.
This is a mental illness akin to lopping off a weewee and saying “I’m a girl!”
And this is different from "Transgendering" someone how?
Idiot could have gone blind by donating her eyes to people not wanting to be blind.
Probably a sadist who gets a kick out of harming mentally ill people. Just like physicians who commit “assisted suicide” and get a kick out of playing God.
How is this different than if he told her she was a man and started cutting parts off.
