Ben Carson has surged into a statistical dead heat with Donald Trump in the race for the 2016 GOP nomination, a new poll shows.
According to an NBC/Wall Street Journal poll released Sunday, Trump still leads the race, with the support of 21% of Republican primary voters across the U.S., but Carson follows with 20% well within the polls 6-percentage-point margin of error.
Just weeks ago, Trump was still the clear front-runner but Carson has been steadily gaining on him since Trumps average performance in the second Republican debate earlier this month.
And just one month ago, in the July NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, Carson attracted only 10% support, compared with Trumps 19%.
In the latest poll, former tech exec Carly Fiorina and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio tied for third, both getting 11% support, while former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush came in fourth with 7%.
Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz followed with 6% and 5%, respectively, while no other candidate received more than 3% support.
Meanwhile, NBC/Wall Street Journal polling of the Democratic candidates, also released Sunday, showed their race for the nomination tightening too.

What I am seeing here, if this poll be true, is that the voters get it on ISLAM and have thrown their lot with him.
I hope that TRUMP will be open to frank talk on the Islamic Infestation killing this nation.
I bet you haven’t checked into her history at all. When you do, get back to me.
I will not change my opinion.
He is hostile to the 2nd Amendment and supports amnesty, he can kiss off on my vote.
With that big an MOE, that’s quite a heavy thumb on the scale.
It's not our fault if you never heard she campaigned for McCain, ran as a "moderate" in the GOP Senate primary and lost by 10 points to Boxer.
She's doing well in the "horse race" for now, but that face won't stay fresh forever...
Couldn’t they have been more accurate than that reading tea leaves....or chicken guts?
I think they polled Fiorina’s relatives, but only as far out as second cousins, and only on her maternal side.
230 people. 48 said Trump 46 said Carson 25 Said Fiorina 25 Said Rubio 16 said Bush 14 said Kasich 12 said Cruz. 40 million Republicans and this is what NBC comes up with?
I think it’s pretty hard to be the CEO of a Fortune 100 company for years and call yourself an “outsider.” Carly is definitely part of the establishment.
You don’t have to be a politician to be an insider. Would you call Jeffry Imelt an “outsider?”
Hank
It took them 5 days to poll less than 500 people. I guess they can’t afford to have more than one person making calls.
The NBC/WSJ poll was conducted Sept. 20-24 of 256 Democratic voters (which has a margin of error of plus-minus 6.1 percentage points) and 230 GOP primary voters (plus-minus 6.5 percentage points). The rest of the poll will be released Monday.
Yea I knew Ben’s Muslim comment would boost him in the polls-—
Likewise, public outspoken bombast about illegals also propels another candidate to heights in the polls and nothing else matters.
I know this man’s character in a personal (albeit indirect) way. I have no doubt of his goodness and honesty, if nothing else. I’m a little touchy about the attacks by Repubs on this superb human being.
Meanwhile, the hypocrisy of people picking on him, or Carly, or any given candidate while even Trump has major holes in his “conservative” resume.
FTR, I would vote for any of them, but I do have my doubts and no one is a clear champion; no clear Reagan, still.
Although I’d venture Carson has more the character of Washington, and I think some are starting to recognize that.
Democrat crossovers skewing the results, just like they plan on doing in the primary.
“Ben Carson ties Donald Trump in race for GOP 2016 nomination”
Media attempt #263 to stop Trump.
So....Trump is an outsider? LOL EVERYONE would immediately suspect Trump of being an “insider” by that definition.
“Carson has been steadily gaining on him since Trumps average performance in the second Republican debate earlier this month.”
Huh? If Trump was average in the debate, Carson was less than average. A gain makes no sense.
Unless the gain is from his accurate Muslim comments. That would be hilarious, since the MSM and GOPe thinks he’ll sink over those.
Carson said he wouldn’t have bombed Afghanistan after 9-11.
They actually polled thousands of people but only reported results on those that fit their narrative.
Just what I am thinking! Bears repeating.
