If you dont have a passport already, you may need to get one soon.
Residents of certain states are going to need to show their passports rather than simply their IDs even if theyre only flying domestic.
Yes, it will infringe upon states rights handed to them by the 10th Amendment and create unnecessary cost to taxpayers in order to implement the change, but lets be real the government doesnt care about that.
From Zero Hedge:
To comply with the 2005 Real ID Act, which the U.S. government has been slowly implementing for the past decade, citizens in a number of different U.S. states will now be forced to obtain a passport if they want to board an airplane even for domestic flights.
The Department of Homeland Security and representatives with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection have declined to comment on why certain states have been singled out, but starting in 2016, residents of New York, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire, and American Samoa will need a passport to fly domestically. All other states will still be able to use their state-issued drivers licenses and IDs for now, at least.

“HAHAHAHAHA! Feel sorry for the suckers that live in those states.”
So you think that’s funny bucko? (Looks also like you also have a reading problem as MINNESOTA is included in that list. I’ll bet you’re also a Viking fan).
So living on Social Security, Grandma decideds to take a once in a lifetime trip and fly down to Arizona to see the grandkids before she can no longer travel. A “new” passport for the elderly lady will run her around $150, a “renewal” around $110. Grandma could use that money for something a bit more important than having to prove she is an American citizen.
I’m not laughing and neither should you be.
Do you really think that airlines are going to go along with this? Stop it. It ain’t happening. Relax and enjoy the evening. I guarantee you, you will not need a passport to travel to these states any time soon.
What???
Minnesota’s on that list?
That’s total BS?
What right do they have to do that??
The new “enhanced” drivers license that we need to board planes in 2016 is what I was referring to. Arizona has not yet implemented this.
Well I was suspicious, as you see in my post. But Zero Hedge is not a satire site.
I think they get “driving priveledge” cards, marked differently from Real ID compliant “Driver License” cards.
Look almost the same to most people - wouldn’t let kids buy booze flashing the latter cards.
Driving between states is still anonymous....for now.
A way to make illegals ....legal ?
In order to vote , one should be caused to first swear a loyalty oath , facing the flag , with a hand on the Bible ;
And show current proof of private sector employment.
The man who killed the history professor at Delta State University recently was identified when he drove across the Mississippi River. So the authorities could set up cameras to take photos of the license plates of all cars crossing state lines.
No, as an example New Hampshire does exactly the kind of vetting that the Real ID act contemplates. But in New Hampshire you have the option of not having your photograph stored in the central license database even though it is of course on your license, and you can request that your license show your mailing address instead of your home address, and that your Social Security number not be stored with your license data in the central license database.
Each of those choices helps preserve the privacy and safety of the license holder. And none of them reduce the value of the license as a tool for identifying the person holding on to it. But they do of course reduce the value of the database as an intelligence system for agencies interested in other issues, like matching up Social Security numbers to faces, even though other agencies have that data - like the State Department for passports.
So the real reason doesn't have anything to do with vetting applicants, just the federal government's desire to have states establish comprehensive databases they can then access.
I suggest you read what the federal government says on their website. You may not believe that either, after all "its the internet..."
Department of Homeland Security Website
"Individuals holding licenses from noncompliant jurisdictions will need to follow alternative access control procedures for purposes covered by the Act. (See Section A of the sidebar). As described below, enforcement for boarding aircraft will occur no sooner than 2016."
Noncompliant States/Territories
Am.Samoa
Louisiana
Minnesota+
New Hampshire**
New York+
+ Federal officials may continue to accept Enhanced Drivers Licenses from these states.
** Has an expired extension and will be subject to enforcement beginning January 19, 2015
uh, this is pretty unconstitutional, isn’t it?
“...the federal government’s desire to have states establish comprehensive databases they can then access.”
Including FReepers. Of course, we knew that already.
And other “suspect” categories. My wife & I are both retired military and NRA life members. We entered & left Canada with a wave of the hand by Canadian border police.
On the U.S. side they scanned our passports & then ordered us into a holding area for the next three hours while our car was searched for contraband. Random? I don’t think so.
Oh yes, that’s very true! Thanks for reminding me.
Most, maybe soon all, police departments are using license plate readers. Many LE vehicles are equipped with them that are scanning constantly, with the scan being read and catalogued instantly.
The same is true I am sure with every traffic camera and probably many private security cams as well.
As described below, enforcement for boarding aircraft will occur no sooner than 2016.”
I nominate that comment to the Comment of the Week.
Listen up, Wisconsin, we are now all going to be required to show a passport in order to fly anywhere within the country, even though you may no longer want to fly overseas.
And they thought our photo ID requirements for voting were outrageous!
FReep Mail me if you want on, or off, this Wisconsin interest ping list.
