... Statues of ... historical figures stand in the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall, where each state has two representatives cast in bronze or marble ...
[Father Junipero] Serra could be the first and only actual saint in Statuary Hall -- Pope Francis recently announced plans to canonize him -- yet he's also a polarizing figure. Is it time to send Serra to the sidelines (or more accurately, move his statue to the California Capitol grounds)? ...

Hey, CA needs to have fair representation of lesbians. Who cares about a bona fide Founding Father?
Did you know that Fr. Serra was a top notch theologian who gave up his prestigious position as a university professor to do mission work with the natives? And that he spent a lot of time riding a donkey up and down the state of California from San Diego to San Francisco and back even to a late age checking on the missions.
All Sally Ride did was to spend time in a space shuttle and sexually goof with another woman.
Junipero Serra — the amn who invented the franchise business.
Pederasts and other pedophiles are disgusting and sick.
Every homo I've ever talked to had an "Uncle Ernie" story. Most of them have since passed away.
Franchise???
I agree. Like I said, Lesbian or not, it’s unfortunate how her life ended. I’m not convinced that’s what should represent California on Capital Hill.
Thanks for the mention. I seem to recall hearing that before. Isn’t it wonderful that everyone outed her after her death, something she never wanted to do while living?
Someone had an agenda, and I’m banking on it being a homosexual activist of some sort. I guess it’s okay if they out her, bad if a straight person does.
(in truth, I don’t know who did it, but this sounds reasoned) If I’m wrong, and I could be, I am sorry for raising the thought.
IMO, the people who should be honored should be of historical positive value. While I think Ride’s activities were special, I don’t see the value of having her commemorated there.
This seems more about getting a homosexual into the Capital Building to demonstrate their contribution to society.
Opening up California with the mission system is much more of a groundbreaking event IMO. Ride was only one of many astronauts. I don’t seek to take anything away from her, but I don’t think her tragic end warrants commemoration of this sort.
If she had been the first astronaut to fly in space, or to land on the Moon or Mars, perhaps. Not this.

In answer to the headline, no, and Ronald Reagan should be added. Thanks SteveH.
I don’t either. I have met and associated with some very decent homosexuals in every other respect. I am a flawed person, so I don’t have room to talk.
If they are living their lives respectfully and quietly like a heterosexual couple, I’m not going to give them grief.
That’s it! Rub it in. LOL
Hmm, well, guess if we gotta replace it, we should do it with a statue of Reagan. Represents what California could be again.
Well, learn something new every day. He wasn’t there last time I was in the rotunda (pre 2000..)
It looks like Jerry Brown.
I do despise those who celebrate their sin, however.
Add me to the polls are for FReeping list. Please.
I didn’t view that as an inappropriate remark. She was a lesbian. I have NO doubt that was a key factor in her being selected.
Accomplishements? She got a masters degree in physics and rode the Space Shuttle twice, became a professor of physics, worked at NASA, and wrote some children’s books. Not to diminish her, but that’s a so-so resume in the pantheon of the greats.
Lastly, Wikipedia says she endorsed Obama.
The California Senate democrats are being dishonest — she was selected putatively for her space “accomplishments,” but LBGT and Obama clinched the deal for them.
Reagan has already been added.
