... Statues of ... historical figures stand in the U.S. Capitol's National Statuary Hall, where each state has two representatives cast in bronze or marble ...
[Father Junipero] Serra could be the first and only actual saint in Statuary Hall -- Pope Francis recently announced plans to canonize him -- yet he's also a polarizing figure. Is it time to send Serra to the sidelines (or more accurately, move his statue to the California Capitol grounds)? ...
Take our pointedly unreliable poll, leave a comment or do both! ...

I’m so very glad there are no other serious problems in our country that we have time and energy to expend on this.

Time to retire *this* abomination.
A real eyesore on one of the most beautiful stretches of road in the country.
There some in North Cali poltics think that Father Serra being Cathoic friar is racist because he brought Chritnisty to Native Americans in cali
Arnold ... as body builder.
I hadn’t realized that, or if I ever knew it I had forgotten.
Now it makes sense. LOL
When will it ever end?
That would leave Reagan there with a Lesbian. The homosexuals would be ecstatic over that.
The “mistreatment” of the Indians by the missionaries is an oft regurgitated sob story.
As for Sally Ride, look her up. She was quite accomplished.
LOL, oh please...
= :^)
Personally, if it weren't for Ride's sexual preferences I doubt the legislature would've given her a second thought. But thats my opinion.
Sally Ride was a very private person. Her lesbian relationship did not become publicly known until after her death.
Please ping me with any Southern California related articles. Thank you!
If you want on or off this ping list, please FReepmail me.
Junipero Serra gives you so much angst and he supposedly decimated the Indian tribes of California, it seems knocking down the missions would be an excellent idea as well.
They stand on valuable land which can be reused for other things.
He doesn’t give *me* any angst. I voted “No” on the poll.
YOU .. make the call!!
FReepers, come to the rescue!
I did some more checking.
SourceSen. Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, the author of the proposal, said the addition of Rides likeness at the U.S. Capitol would build on Californias tradition of breaking from convention. Thats because Ride would be the first acknowledged gay or lesbian person with a statue in the collection. She would also be the first woman from California enshrined in the hall.
In California, were visionaries. We lead. Why not acknowledge the contribution of a woman? Lara, who is Catholic and openly gay, said on the floor. We respect the past. But we are not bound by it.
Ride was very private about her personal life. She was not a gay activist. Her sexual orientation was not publicly revealed until after her death.
BTW, unlike a lot of folks here, I don't hate homosexuals.
A lot of gays are like that. They are not swishy or bull dykes.
My brother was gay and looked and some normally. He spent his time on his stupids and on his job. Most people never knew he was gay.
I don’t hate them either. I wonder how long ...
BTW: What if they're pederasts?
Admitting homosexuals are among us is not an issue, being forced into accepting that what they do as "normal" is very much an issue.
