Oregon To Be First In Nation To Implement Per-Mile Road Tax Program
The Truth About Cars ^ | 3/9/2015 | Cameron Aubernon

Posted on 03/09/2015 9:39:57 AM PDT by nascarnation

With EVs and other fuel-efficient vehicles saving consumers money at the pump, Oregon will be the first to issue a per-mile road tax to refill its coffers.

Automotive News reports the state will offer two options to its motorists: pay at the pump, or pay a 1.5-cent rate per mile traversed. The latter will be conducted through a device that plugs into a vehicle’s OBD port, then gathers mileage data to determine how much the motorist will pay in tax.

Right now, the program — set to begin July 1 — will be implemented by the Oregon DOT in partnership with Sanef ITS Technologies America and Intelligent Mechatronic Systems, the latter supplying the aforementioned OBD mileage reader.

Up to 5,000 volunteers will participate in the initial program, which will compare the tax paid at the pump to the miles driven. The results will be turned over to ODOT, which will then determine if a motorist is given a refund or an invoice based on said findings.

Oregon won’t be the only one to undergo a road tax program: over 10 other states are either in the process of passing legislation or conducting trials for such programs.

Ignorant beyond belief. The increase cost to truck in supplies will be passed on to consumers. So watch your food and other items. Oregon, you are approaching the most idiotic State in the US.

Or what about the opposite, people who make their own bio-diesel or ethanol fuel?

Is there any way to spoof that OBD port and to reroute it to another module that you can program to register whatever mileage you want?

Is there any other way to tell the gestapo to go f___ themselves?

Tax for storing rain and tax for letting it run off. They tax us coming and going. In the front door and out the back. Death and taxes.

In Houston, Fat Girl taxes us monthly on how much rain falls on our roofs and driveways. When it doesn't rain all month she taxes us anyway. Seems like that could invite a court challenge during droughts like 2011's.

Oh, yeah. Sooner or later the government will simply start seizing all of our assets and all of our income and then rationing it back to us as they determine we need it.

And they’ll do it for the children, of course.

And if they travel out of state? How will they be made to prove what mileage was done in state?

They are out there. They aren’t cheap. They are illegal because they can be used to change the odometer reading. You are better off getting caught for murder than rolling back car mileages.

You wouldn't necessarily roll back the odometer mileage, although I can see how that would be an obvious option of such a device. I'm just talking about something that could stand in for the true mileage register when some gestapo agent comes looking to tax your driving. When you sold the car, you'd remove it and the true mileage would register.

At least if you were honest with the buyer. There's nothing whatsoever wrong with screwing the government, in my book, but a private party is another story.

I don’t understand why they need (technically) to pull anything off the OBD. I’m pretty sure every car has this little thing in the dashboard that has numbers on it that tell you how many miles are on the vehicle. An odometer, or something like that. Mileage that you report when you get an inspection, registration, oil change, etc etc.

The only exception being very few vehicles that have a mileage exemption.
