Raymond Ventrone figured there had to be a better way to get people to surrender guns than offering a few hundred dollars or a Giant Eagle gift card.
I've never thought that was much incentive to turn a gun in for guys who make $2,000 or $3,000 a week selling drugs, he said. Let's go a step further and offer them a career.
Ventrone, business manager of Boilermakers Local 154 in Banksville, convinced his union to partner with Pittsburgh and Allegheny County police departments to establish a Guns for Opportunity program that offers anyone who turns in a gun the opportunity for free technical education and a career.
Police will collect and dispose of surrendered guns no questions asked and the Boilermakers will enroll participants in welding school.
Ventrone said he wants to provide alternate opportunities to neighborhoods hard hit by violence and crime.
We're going to go into each neighborhood, ask them to lay down their arms and give them the opportunity to come into our trade, he said. But they're going to have to work. They're not just going to give their guns and become a boilermaker the next day.

Gee, wonder if when they go into the ‘neighborhoods’ to offer their fabulous deal— Will they go unarmed and leave their bodyguards/chauffeur’s home?
You can bet that the union’s enforcement goons won’t be disarmed.
this action will encourage gun stealing by the black urban subculture youth that will steal guns to get an education /s
Disarm yourself and join a union. Democrat seedbed
Then some Black will have a grand idea and call Sharpton to file a law suit because
learning is work and no work without pay is slavery. The Jackson Bros will milk
the union once again until they've learned a lesson.
What's the lesson? Never hire a Black for anything including free training
and stop trying to steal the Democrat plantation Negro Voters on the dole. They
can't have Blacks paying taxes and realizing what a rip-off Gov really is.
If he ain’t a muslim he’s sure doing a good imitation.
There are folks who make "$2,000 or $3,000 a week" selling drugs, but they are so far up on the gang's organization chart that the probability of recruiting them for a job involving manual labor is less than zero.
So I don't know what this gang (the union) is up to. Maybe the Department of Injustice is about to slam them for not having enough of Holder's People as members.
This is Pennsylvania, not New Jersey or New York. Guns are completely legal. Anyone who can pass the background check can walk into WalMart and buy a gun. Much cheaper tuition than Penn State, although I'd still worry about the showers. Bizarre way to fill a quota, unless you don't actually want to recruit the smartest and hardest working candidates.
A sneaky way to arm the union, that’s all we need!
Give up your guns to the boilermakers and only the boilermakers will have guns! (Great accessory on the picket line /S)
He looks like he’s living well and eating good.
Sure. Trade in your gun, stop being a lazy, shiftless, street thug and become a lazy, shiftless union thug.
Sounds like a natural career progression.
Turn in your gun and we’ll teach you to be a freeloading union thug. Nice.
For some young punk with actual talent it might well be worth it to go steal a gun or buy a Raven for $50 on the street for the purpose of turning it in to get that training.
A better idea: sign them up in a multi-level marketing scam—at least they’ll be able to use their existing skill set.
Rubber band guns too? I can pick one up for $0.99 and turn it in...
No, not worth it.
“...swear allegiance to Lenin”
That’s a given!
I wonder if the thug creatively nibbled at a pop-tart and presented that, would he get the training?
Union thugs prefer clubs and bats.
Boilermakers make good money. The salaries I have seen in SC & NC (for Duke power) range from 60K - 120K. That said, anyone who seriously takes them up on the offer probably isn’t much of a troublemaker to begin with. Also, boilermakers probably won’t be working on boilers for much longer if the EPA keeps up with shutting down coal plants. I guess the nuke plants still run boilers as aux power but there aren’t very many to service.
